  1. 1. Functional Traits in Sphagnum

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Fia Bengtsson; Uppsala universitet.; [2019]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; peat mosses; functional traits; NPP; decay resistance; N2 fixation; desiccation resistance; climate; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : Peat mosses (Sphagnum) are ecosystem engineers that largely govern carbon sequestration in northern hemisphere peatlands. I investigated functional traits in Sphagnum species and addressed the questions: (I) Are growth, photosynthesis and decomposition and the trade-offs between these traits related to habitat or phylogeny?, (II) Which are the determinants of decomposition and are there trade-offs between metabolites that affect decomposition?, (III) How do macro-climate and local environment determine growth in Sphagnum across the Holarctic?, (IV) How does N2 fixation vary among different species and habitats?, (V) How do species from different microtopographic niches avoid or tolerate desiccation, and are leaf and structural traits adaptations to growth high above the water table?Photosynthetic rate and decomposition in laboratory conditions (innate growth and decay resistance) were related to growth and decomposition in their natural habitats. 2. 2. Wood Plastic Composites made from Modified Wood Aspects on Moisture Sorption, Micromorphology and Durability

    University dissertation from Stockholm : KTH

    Author : Kristoffer Segerholm; KTH.; SP Trä.; [2007]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICINE Morphology; cell biology; pathology Morphology Biomaterials; MEDICIN Morfologi; cellbiologi; patologi Morfologi Biomaterial; Wood plastic composites; WPC; acetylation; heat treatment; furfurylation; moisture sorption; micromorphology; decay; UV laser; soil test;

    Abstract : Wood plastic composite (WPC) materials have seen a continuous market growth worldwide in the last decade. So-called extruded WPC profiles are today mainly used in outdoor applications, e.g. decking, railing and fencing. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies of drug resistance in minor HIV quasispecies

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Laboratory Medicine

    Author : Halime Ekici; Karolinska Institutet.; Karolinska Institutet.; [2014]

    Abstract : The main objective was to study drug resistance mutations (DRM) in the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) gene of minor HIV-1 quasispecies, not detectable with standard techniques. Sensitive allele-specific PCR (AS- PCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) were developed to study resistance to drugs of relevance in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC); the nucleoside analogue RT inhibitor (NRTI) lamivudine (3TC) and the non-nucleoside RT inhibitors (NNRTIs) efavirenz (EFV) and nevirapine (NVP). 4. 4. DESIREE: Instrumentation Developments and Hot Metal Cluster Decays

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Physics, Stockholm University

    Author : Emma K. Anderson; Stockholms universitet.; [2019]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DESIREE; microchannel plate; clusters; spontaneous decay; small metal cluster anions; silver; copper; gold; carbon dianions; fragmentation; vibrational autodetachment; DESIREE; mikrokanalplattor; kluster; spontana sönderfall; små metallklusteranjoner; silver; koppar; guld; kol di-anjoner; fragmentering; Physics; fysik;

    Abstract : This thesis presents instrumentation developments and measurements performed at the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment, DESIREE, at Stockholm University. DESIREE operates at cryogenic temperatures ~13 K, with very low background pressures of ~10-14mbar, allowing the observation of stored ions to long times of tens of seconds and longer. READ MORE

  5. 5. Genetic variation in resistance to fungal storage diseases in apple

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Physics, Stockholm University

    Author : Masoud Ahmadi-afzadi; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet.; [2015]

    Abstract : Apple is one of the economically and culturally most important fruit crops and has many health-related benefits. Apple production is, however, sensitive to several fungal diseases including blue mold, caused by Penicillium expansum. READ MORE
