  1. 1. Development of Models, Methods, and Materiel for Deep Tissue Imaging using Light, Ultrasound, and Spectral-Hole Burning

    Author : David Hill; NanoLund: Centre for Nanoscience; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biomedical imaging; ultrasound optical tomography; ultrasound-modulated optical tomography; acousto-optical tomography; Monte Carlo light transport; spectral-hole-burning filters; rare-earth-ion doped crystals; stoichiometric lithium niobate;

    Abstract : The medical imaging technique called “ultrasound optical tomography” (UOT) entails light scattered in tissue that is given spatial information by interacting with an ultrasound field, thus allowing for molecular information to be imaged with ultrasonic resolution. This thesis discusses how UOT can be implemented, with most attention put toward the implementation using spectral-hole-burning filters (SHF) in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals. READ MORE

  2. 2. Ultrasonic Quantification of Skeletal Muscle Dynamics : Feasibility and Limitations

    Author : Frida Lindberg; Lars-Åke Brodin; Christer Grönlund; Tomas Jansson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ultrasound; skeletal muscle; intramuscular; dynamics; Tissue Doppler Imaging; Speckle Tracking; strain; quantification;

    Abstract : Pain and disorders of the human skeletal muscles are one of the most common reasons for medical consultations in the western countries today and there is a great need to improve both the understanding and treatment of several different muscular conditions.Techniques describing the muscle function in vivo are often limited by either their invasiveness or lack of spatial resolution. 3. 3. Neck muscle function in individuals with persistent pain and disability after whiplash injury

    Author : Gunnel Peterson; Anneli Peolsson; Åsa Dedering; Thorne Wallman; Björn Äng; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Background: Neck pain and disability are common after whiplash injury. One year after the accident up to 50 % still have symptoms called whiplash associated disorders (WAD). Despite decades of research the cause of persistent pain and disability are largely unknown and effective treatment and diagnostic tools are lacking. READ MORE

  4. 4. Endometrial Cancer - Studies on recurrences, complications and preoperative diagnostics

    Author : Åsa Åkesson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; endometrial cancer; lymphadenectomy; recurrence; survival; surgical complications; diagnostic accuracy;

    Abstract : Introduction: The most common gynecological cancer is Endometrial Cancer (EC). The prognosis is generally favorable, mainly due to an early diagnosis. However, there are subgroups of EC with a higher risk for metastases and recurrences resulting in poorer survival. READ MORE

  5. 5. Diving and the brain

    Author : Anders Rosén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; biomarkers; brain; central nervous system; decompression sickness; dive research; diving; neuronal damage; saturation diving; tau protein; venous gas embolism; neurofilament light; glial fibrillary acid protein; tau; VGE;

    Abstract : Abstract Introduction There are reports that long-term diving is associated with cognitive impairments. This raises the question if diving itself is harmful to the brain in the absence of decompression sickness or hypoxia. READ MORE
