  1. 1. Groundwater-Seawater Interactions : Seawater Intrusion, Submarine Groundwater Discharge and Temporal Variability and Randomness Effects

    Author : Carmen Prieto; Georgia Destouni; Vassilios Kaleris; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydraulic engineering; Seawater intrusion; submarine groundwater discharge; coastal groundwater management; coastal zone management; temporal variability; temporal randomness; Vattenteknik; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : Fresh groundwater quality and availability in coastal areas is affected by seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers, and coastal water quality and ecosystem status may be significantly affected by groundwater pollutants that are transported into coastal waters by submarine groundwater dis-charge (SGD). This thesis uses an overall regional perspective for investigating: i) seawater intru-sion and its possible control in sustainable coastal groundwater management; ii) SGD and its relevant quantification as one interacting part among the diverse main regional pathways of freshwater and tracer/pollutant inputs from land to sea; and iii) the integrated system functioning of both i) and ii) as main components of the same coastal groundwater system. 2. 2. Microbial ecology in deep granitic groundwater - activity and impact of viruses

    Author : Hallgerd Eydal; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : ATP; Desulfovibrio; groundwater; bacteriophage; Podoviridae; sulphate-reducing bacteria; viral ecology;

    Abstract : The deep subsurface environments in granitic rock can be studied and sampled at the Äspö hard rock laboratory (HRL) close to Oskarshamn in Sweden. Here, the groundwater is anaerobic and total counts give numbers of 104 to 106 cells mL-1. However, these measurements do not reveal if the cells are active and alive. READ MORE

  3. 3. Microbial life deep underground : From anaerobic cultures to reconstructed genomes

    Author : George Westmeijer; Mark Dopson; Hans Røy; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Continental deep biosphere; microbial ecology; anaerobic enrichment cultures; Candidatus Desulforudis audaxviator; Thiobacillus denitrificans; flow-cells; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : The deep biosphere refers to the vast ecosystem of life beneath the Earth’s surface, residing in the fractured bedrock and pores of rocks, largely isolated from solar energy. These fractures enclose an important reservoir of groundwater that contains microorganisms active in processes such as the uptake of inorganic carbon, sulfur cycling, or the degradation of organic matter. 4. 4. Analytic Element Models for Groundwater Flow and Linear Elasticity in Fractured Rocks

    Author : Erik Toller; Auli Niemi; Otto Strack; Qinghua Lei; James Craig; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Analytic element method; fractures; tunnels; complex variables; linear elasticity; groundwater; fractured rock; Hydrology; Hydrologi;

    Abstract : There is an increasing demand for using deep underground space at various scales, such as small-scale geothermal wells and large-scale projects like tunnels or nuclear waste disposal. The deep underground space in fractured rock is a heterogeneous and challenging medium. READ MORE

  5. 5. Distributed thermal response tests : New insights on U-pipe and Coaxial heat exchangers in groundwater-filled boreholes

    Abstract : U-pipe Borehole Heat Exchangers (BHE) are widely used today in ground source heating and cooling systems in spite of their less than optimal performance. This thesis provides a better understanding on the function of U-pipe BHEs and Investigates alternative methods to reduce the temperature difference between the circulating fluid and the borehole wall, including one thermosyphon and three different types of coaxial BHEs.
