  2. 2. Bioprospecting and deep-sea genetic resources in a fragmenting international law

    Author : Niels Krabbe; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; public international law; law of the sea; international environmental law; WTO law; bioprospecting; biotechnology; genetic resources; deep-sea; biological diversity; areas beyond national jurisdiction; fragmentation; treaty interpretation; norm conflict; regimes; commons; conflict clauses;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates if public international law manages to function as a coherent system in the case of deep-sea bioprospecting, where rules in three regimes provide seemingly inconsistent obligations for states. Based on an investigation of the development of bioprospecting and patenting of deep-sea genetic resources, the study explores how rules in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Trade Organization Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (WTO TRIPS) apply to such activities. 3. 3. Oceanographic studies of the Baltic Sea with emphasis on sea ice and mixing processes

    Author : Christian Nohr; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Baltic Sea; Water and Heat budgets; Deep-water mixing; Internal Wavedrag; Dynamical Sea Ice production; Sea Ice dynamics;

    Abstract : This thesis comprises of model estimates of the water and heat budgets, re-estimating of the budget of deep-water mixing energy, model studies of generation mechanisms for internal waves, sea ice dynamermics and finally sea ice monitoring. Common site for all the studies are the Baltic Sea. READ MORE

  4. 4. Sex, Molecules, and Gene control : Ecophysiological and evolutionary aspects of key sponge species from Antarctic shallow waters and the deep sea

    Author : Vasiliki Koutsouveli; Paco Cárdenas; Anders Backlund; Ana Riesgo; Cassandra G. Extavour; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Porifera; Demospongiae; Geodia spp.; Phakellia ventilabrum; reproduction; gametogenesis; Antarctica; deep sea; sponge grounds; histology; molecular machinery; electron microscopy; RNA-seq; proteomics; lipidomics; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy;

    Abstract : Very little is known about the ecophysiological aspects of Porifera (sponges) from Antarctica and North Atlantic, even though they are keystone components of these habitats. Being the earliest diverging metazoan lineage, sponges also play a fundamental role in our understanding of animal evolution. READ MORE

  5. 5. Post-Glacial History of Sea-Level and Environmental Change in the Southern Baltic Sea

    Author : Marloes Kortekaas; Kvartärgeologi; []

    Abstract : A new palaeoenvironmental record of the post-glacial history of the southern Baltic Sea (~14 ka to present) is presented. During this period, large water level and salinity changes occurred in the Baltic Basin due to opening and closing of connections to the North Atlantic. READ MORE
