31. Eastern equatorial Pacific bulk sediment properties and paleoceanography since the late Neogene
Abstract : Reconstructing eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP) oceanography since the late Neogene (about 8 million years ago, Ma) is a central topic in current paleoceanographic investigations. The reason for this is two-fold. READ MORE

32. Ocean circulation in the Amundsen Sea, West Antarctica
Abstract : The increase of mass loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet is a significant contribution to global sea level rise. The most rapid changes are occurring in the Amundsen Sea area, where the thinning of the floating glaciers is assumed to be driven by the ocean. READ MORE

33. Exploring the diversity and evolution of giant viruses in deep sea sediments using genome-resolved metagenomics
Abstract : Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on this planet, which is impressive considering that they are completely dependent on their hosts for reproduction. Recently the idea of what viruses are has changed dramatically, with the discovery of giant viruses that belong to the Nucleocytoplasmic Large DNA Viruses (NCLDV), such as Mimiviridae, Marseilleviridae, and the proposed families Pandoraviruses, and Pithoviruses. 34. Pan-African and Red Sea tectonics of eastern Eritrea
Abstract : This thesis proposes that the Pan-African tectonic grain in eastem Eritrea influenced theCenozoic opening of the Red Sea. Evidence is based on studies of the structures and fabrics of various phases associated with both the Pan-African orogeny and subsequent Red Sea extension. READ MORE

35. Benthic fluxes of biogenic elements in the Baltic Sea : Influence of oxygen and macrofauna
Abstract : This thesis investigates how benthic fluxes of phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and silicon (Si) change upon oxygenation of anoxic soft bottoms in the brackish, eutrophicated Baltic Sea. Direct measurements in situ by benthic landers demonstrated that fluxes of dissolved inorganic P (DIP) from anoxic bottom sediments in the Eastern Gotland Basin are higher than previously thought (Paper I).
