  1. 1. Combined Molecular Dynamics and Embedded-Cluster Calculations in Metal Oxide Surface Chemistry

    Author : Björn Herschend; Kersti Hermansson; Micael Baudin; Joachim Sauer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Inorganic chemistry; embedded-cluster; ab initio; molecular dynamics; metal oxide; ceria; magnesium oxide; adsorption; surface defect; Oorganisk kemi; Inorganic chemistry; Oorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : The development and improvement of the functionality of metal oxides in heterogeneous catalysis and other surface chemical processes can greatly benefit from an atomic-level understanding of the surface chemistry. Atomistic calculations such as quantum mechanical (QM) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can provide highly detailed information about the atomic and electronic structure, and constitute valuable complements to experimental surface science techniques. 2. 2. Fundamentals of Wetting and Mechanical Durability of Superhydrophobic Coatings

    Author : Pontus Olin; Lars Wågberg; Fredrik Tiberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : In paper I the friction between three different superhydrophobic surfaces and water drops were investigated using high‑speed video. The surfaces were two based on a hydrophobic wax and the third was the leaf of a Lotus (Nelumbo Nucifera). The acceleration of water drops was measured as a function of drop size and surface inclination. READ MORE

  3. 3. Astrochemical Surface Science: Water Desorption from Nanostructured Graphite

    Author : Anna Clemens; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; intercalation; temperature programmed desorption; diffuse reflection; geometrical resonances; water ice; ultra high vacuum;

    Abstract : To date, around 180 different molecules have been identified in the interstellar medium (ISM). Some of them form molecular ices on cold interstellar dust grain surfaces. An interstellar dust grain particle is in the order of nanometres in size and is usually composed of a carbonaceous or silicatious grain core. READ MORE

  4. 4. Beyond average crystal structures: understanding extended and local environments in proton-conducting Sc-substituted BaTiO3 perovskites

    Author : Nico Torino; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; proton conducting oxide; IR; thermogravimetry; perovskite; neutron scattering; Raman; Reverse Monte Carlo; ordering; BaTiO3;

    Abstract : Proton conducting ceramics are very promising for applications concerned with energy sourcing with cleaner, safer, more abundant and cheaper alternatives to fossil fuels. These materials are still in development and advances in the field depend on a better understanding of the role of defects, their identification and location in the host framework, and the assessment of their short- and long-range dynamics and kinetics. 5. 5. Fabrication and Functionalization of Graphene and Other Carbon Nanomaterials in Solution

    Author : Erika Widenkvist; Ulf Jansson; Reine Wallenberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Graphene; Functionalization; Carbon nanotubes; Carbon nanosheets; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi; Organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : In the last decades several new nanostructures of carbon have been discovered, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the recently discovered 2-dimensional graphene. These new materials exhibit extraordinary and unique properties—making them extremely interesting both for fundamental science and for future applications. READ MORE
