  1. 11. Defence and signalling in Potato-Phytophthora infestans interactions

    Author : Ashfaq Ali; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phytophthora infestans; Plant defence; hypersensitive response; resistance; susceptibility;

    Abstract : Potato is one of the major food crops and its yield is severely affected by late blight disease caused by Phytophthora infestans. P. infestans has the ability to manipulate plant defence signalling by secreting effector molecules causing so called effector triggered susceptibility. READ MORE

  2. 12. Functional dualism of antimicrobial host defence peptides

    Author : Åse Björstad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : antimicrobial; apoptosis; cathelicidin; host defence peptide; interleukin 8; LL-37; permeabilisation;

    Abstract : Antimicrobial host defence peptides are central to innate immunity and many possess direct antimicrobial actions on bacteria as well as indirect immunomodulatory functions on human leukocytes. Different variants of the bifunctional Helicobacter pylori peptide, Hp(2-20), were synthesised and inhibition zone assays and chemiluminescence systems were employed for determination of direct antimicrobial action and superoxide release (immunomodulatory) from human neutrophils, respectively. 3. 13. To defend or to offend? : Bacterial defence and competition systems

    Author : Danna Lee; Sanna Koskiniemi; Marjan van der Woude; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : bacterial defence systems; bacterial competition systems; toxin-antitoxin systems; colicin; contact-dependent growth inhibition CDI ; type VI secretion system T6SS ; Rearrangement hotspot Rhs proteins; CRISPR; horizontal gene transfer; antibiotic resistance; Salmonella; Enterotoxigenic E. coli ETEC ; probiotics; synthetic biology.;

    Abstract : Bacteria are prokaryotic microorganisms that can be found in all niches of the biosphere. Bacteria must constantly evolve in order to survive and adapt to their environments. Defence systems and competition systems play a vital role in ensuring the survival of bacteria. READ MORE

  5. 15. Grazer-induced responses in marine phytoplankton

    Author : Johanna Bergkvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton; defence; dinoflagellate; diatoms; paralytic shellfish toxins; polyunsaturated aldehydes; chain formation;

    Abstract : Phytoplankton are the most important primary producers in the world’s oceans, yet little is known of how they avoid the constant threats from the pelagic grazers. From land it is well known that plants defend themselves by having thorns or producing compounds unpalatable to grazers. READ MORE
