  1. 1. Ecology of juvenile turbot and flounder in the Central Baltic Sea : Implications for recruitment

    Author : Jesper Martinsson; Sture Hansson; Magnus Appelberg; Anders Nissling; Leif Pihl; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Psetta maxima; Platichthys flesus; juvenile; Baltic Sea; nursery ground; distribution; recruitment; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Our understanding of turbot and flounder ecology in the Baltic Sea is insufficient for sound management decisions. This thesis aims to fill some gaps in current knowledge by providing information of the ecology of turbot and flounder within their juvenile habitat, and to relate these findings to issues assumed relevant for recruitment variation. 2. 2. Effects of seed size and habitat on recruitment patterns in grassland and forest plants

    Author : Karin Lönnberg; Ove Eriksson; Per Milberg; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Seed size; seedling establishment; seedling survival; recruitment; seed removal; co-existence; game-theory; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : A trade-off between seed size and seed number is central in seed ecology, and has been suggested to be related to a trade-off between competition and colonization, as well as to a trade-off between stress tolerance and fecundity. Large seeds endure hazards during establishment, such as shading, drought, litter coverage and competition from other plants, better than do small seeds, due to a larger amount of stored resources in the seed. 3. 3. Upholding the coral loop : Resilience, alternative stable states and feedbacks in coral reefs

    Author : Albert Norström; Magnus Nyström; Nancy Knowlton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; resilience; alternative stable states; regimes; feedbacks; recruitment; coral reefs; marine ecosystem management; regime shifts; phase shifts; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; naturresurshushållning; Natural Resources Management;

    Abstract : Coral reefs are suffering unprecedented declines in coral cover and species diversity. These changes are often associated with  substantial shifts in community structure to new dominant organisms. Ultimately, these “phase shifts” can be persistent and very difficult to return from. 4. 4. On dysregulated inflammation and airway host defense

    Author : Ravi K. V. Bhongir; allergologi och palliativ medicin Lungmedicin; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aiway inflammation; Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD ; Cystic Fibrosis; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; DNase I;

    Abstract : Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cystic fibrosis (CF) are characterized by dysregulated inflammation of the airways. The increased influx of immune cells and the accumulation of cytokines lead to cell death, tissue destruction and impaired pulmonary function. READ MORE

  5. 5. Innate defense mechanisms of the nasal airway

    Author : Henrik Widegren; Lund näs- och halssjukdomar Öron-; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neutrophils; Leukotriene B4; CC10; TNF-alpha; innate immunity; allergic rhinitis; Airway inflammation;

    Abstract : Allergic and infectious rhinitis are prevalent conditions that besides a direct morbidity also causes exacerbations of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The immune mechanisms associated with various forms of rhinitis are not fully understood. READ MORE
