  1. 1. Degenerative cervical myelopathy: Surgical treatment, imaging evaluation, and outcome

    Author : Eddie de Dios Perez; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cervical spondylotic myelopathy; decompression and fusion; degenerative cervical myelopathy; EMS; muscle-preserving laminectomy; MRI; P-mJOA; sagittal alignment; surgical outcome;

    Abstract : Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is the most common cause of spinal cord impairment in adults worldwide. The overall aims of this thesis were to compare patient-reported clinical outcomes, adverse events, and cost-effectiveness between decompression alone and decompression with fusion; evaluate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based sagittal alignment measurements; determine postoperative improvement rates and potential predictors of surgical outcome; and compare the patient-derived modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (P-mJOA) scale with the European Myelopathy Score (EMS) for the assessment of DCM. Abstract : In five autopsy specimen studies human temporomandibular joints were investigated by conventional tomography, macroscopy, and microscopy for degenerative changes, in particular erosive hard-tissue changes.In the microscopical evaluation special attention was paid to the calcified cartilage. 3. 3. Mitochondrial dysfunction in ageing and degenerative disease

    Author : Anna Wredenberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells contains a dynamic network of double-membraned organelles, called mitochondria, which perform the process of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) that provides cellular energy in the form of ATP. The respiratory chain creates an electrochemical gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, which drives ATP synthesis by the ATP synthase. READ MORE

  4. 4. Inflammatory and degenerative disease in the temporomandibular joint

    Author : Göran W Gynther; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : clinical findings; degenerative changes; generalized osteoarthritis; histology; immunohistochemistry; internal derangement; radiographic changes; rheumatoid arthritis; synovial inflammation; temporomandibular jointISBN 91-628-1 9;

    Abstract : Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopy is an established technique with high diagnostic accuracy regarding synovitis and degenerative changes of the articular fibrocartilage and disk. However, so far no studies have been done to correlate the macroscopic and histologic findings with each arthroscopic criterion. READ MORE

  5. 5. Outcome after surgery for isthmic spondylolisthesis and degenerative disc disease

    Author : Peter Endler; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Individuals with isthmic spondylolisthesis and lumbar degenerative disc disease may have low back and leg pain. Those with persistent symptoms non-responsive to conservative treatment are sometimes treated surgically. Various surgical methods have been introduced, but long-term outcome comparisons are scarce.
