  1. 1. Environmentally Degradable Polyethylene : Effects of Additives and Environment on the Degradation and Degradation products

    Author : Farideh Khabbaz; KTH; []
    Keywords : LDPE; polyethylene; oxidative degradation; photo-oxidation; thermo-oxidation; degradation products; photosensitisers; pro-oxidant; starch; master-batch; gas chromatography mass-spectrometry; GC-MS; solid phase microextraction; SPME;

    Abstract : This thesis summarises and compares the influences ofdifferent additives (photosensitisers, pro-oxidants, abiodegradable filler) on blown low-density polyethylene (LDPE)films during photo- and thermal degradation with respect tochemical changes in the polymer matrices and identifieddegradation products. Additives studied were irondimethyldithiocarbamate (FeDMC), nickel dibutyldithocarbamate(NiDBC), carbon black, starch, a pro-oxidant that consisted ofmanganese stearate together with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)or natural rubber (NR) and a master batch containing linearLDPE, starch and pro-oxidant. Author : Lina Burman; Ann-Christine Albertsson; Marek Kowalczuk; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Chemical engineering; polymer; chromatographic fingerprinting; gas-chromatography – mass spectrometry; GC-MS; degradable polyethylene; prooxidant systems; chemiluminescence; oxidation; degradation mechanisms; accelerated ageing; antioxidants; transformation products; microwave assisted extraction; MAE; solid-phase microextraction; SPME; volatiles; solid phase extraction; SPE; Kemiteknik; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : Chromatography and extraction techniques, and also chemiluminescence have been utilized to develop new rapid and informative tools in the evaluation of long-term properties and environmental effects of polymeric materials. Methods were developed for classification of materials and for early and rapid degradation detection. READ MORE

  3. 3. Influence of the degradation mechanism on the molecular weight changes for some degradable polymers

    Author : Bengt Erlandsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The influence of degradation mechanism on molecular weightchanges was investigated for certain degradable polymers. Thepolymers investigated were modified low density polyethylene(LDPE), poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) and aliphatic polyesters. READ MORE
