1. EstimatingChloride concentration in surface water and groundwater duet to deicing salt application
Abstract : A road in operation along with its traffic can pose aserious pollutant threat to groundwater and surface water inits vicinity. Examples of pollutants are metals from thecorrosion of vehicles, rails and poles and the wear of roadsurfaces and tyres; hydrocarbons from the wear of roadsurfaces, tyres, exhausts, oils; sodium chloride from roadsalt; and hazardous goods discharged in accidents. 3. Modelling the impacts of deicing salt on soil water in a roadside environment
Abstract : This study tested a dynamic modelling approach based on salt application, meteorological data and generic descriptions of hydrogeological environments for describing the spread of deicing salt to the surroundings and the corresponding increase in chloride storage in soil. Both the amount of chloride storage and the annual variation pattern were significantly altered due to deicing salt application and spread to the roadside environment. READ MORE

4. Low temperature deicing of road infrastructure using renewable energy
Abstract : Winter road maintenance is costly but it is inevitable since it is necessary to keep roads accessible and safe during winter. Current winter road maintenance methods use annually 600 000 tons of salt, in the Nordic countries. The salt ends up in the environment along the roads and results in environmental challenges. 5. Experimental Study of De-icing Salt-frost Scaling in Concrete with Low-calcium Fly Ash or Slag : Influence of Drying and Carbonation, and Air Content
Abstract : In order to reduce the net climate impact of concrete production, it is necessary for the industry to undertake several actions. Among these is to include fly ash and slag as supplementary cementitious materials. Accordingly, this project has studied concrete containing low-calcium fly ash or ground-granulated blast-furnace slag. READ MORE
