  1. 11. Divergence, selection, demographic history and conservation genomics of sibling bird species in boreal forest in Northern Eurasia and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

    Author : Kai Song; Jacob Höglund; Yue Hua Sun; Peter Halvarsson; Juha Merilä; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sichuan Jay; Siberian Jay; Chinese Grouse; Hazel Grouse; genomics; demographic history; ROH; genetic load;

    Abstract : I used two pairs of sibling boreal forest bird species to study divergence, selection, demographics, and conservation in northern Eurasia and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau at the microsatellite level (chapter 1) and whole genome level (chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5). In chapter 1, which is the first study to describe genetic diversity of the Sichuan Jay, I used microsatellite markers to estimate genetic differentiation in Sichuan Jay and Siberian Jay populations. 2. 12. Essays on demographic factors and housing markets

    Author : Marie Heiborn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Economics; Nationalekonomi; Economics; Nationalekonomi; nationalekonomi; Economics;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of four essays on demographic variables and housing markets.Essay I analyses the impact of demographic changes on housing demand. A demographic demand variable is constructed out of the age structure of housing demand and the age composition of the population. READ MORE

  3. 13. Divergence, admixture and continuity in the human past : Demographic inference using ancient and modern genomes

    Author : James McKenna; Mattias Jakobsson; Per Sjödin; Ida Moltke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Human evolution; population genetics; ancient genomes; population continuity; divergence; Biology with Specialisation in Human Evolution and Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot människans evolution och genetik;

    Abstract : Demographic forces shaping the genetic variation we observe today can include population divergences, admixture events and continuity through time. The advancement of high-throughput sequencing technologies, together with developments in molecular and bio-informatics methods, mean the number of ancient genomes available for inference has risen steeply. 4. 14. Genetic structure, demographic change and extinction dynamics in the collared lemming and woolly mammoth

    Author : Eleftheria Palkopoulou; Love Dalén; Richard Edward Green; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Abstract : In light of current climate change it is critical to understand how different species have been affected in the past by well-known climatic events. In this thesis, DNA was retrieved from ancient material to study the population dynamics of two cold-adapted taxa that capture the extremes of body size range in mammals: the collared lemming (Dicrostonyx sp. 5. 15. Closing the gap : applying health and socio-demographic surveillance to complex health transitions in South and sub-Saharan Africa

    Author : Stephen M Tollman; Stig Wall; Demissie Habte; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; demographic surveillance system; health transition; mortality transition; fertility transition; health policy; primary health care; South Africa; Epidemiology; Epidemiologi;

    Abstract : Background: The challenge of research in resource-poor settings remains a profound concern and is closely linked to African social development. Work of this thesis spans the end of apartheid and first decade of the democratic era in South Africa, along with emergence of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. READ MORE
