  1. 1. Generation and Applications of Picosecond Pulses in High-Capacity Fiber Optic Systems

    Author : Jie Li; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nonlinear distortion; optical pulse shaping; dispersion-management; eye-diagram; cross-phase modulation; optical sampling; optical fiber applications; multiplexing; parametric amplification; demultiplexing; optical pulses; fiber optical communication; nonlinear systems; time division multiplexing; four-wave mixing; polarization-mode dispersion; optical signal processing; fiber optical nonlinearities; fiber ring laser; soliton robustness; mode-locking; optical filters; networks;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with short optical pulse generation from actively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring lasers (ML-EFRL) and their applications in all-optical signal processing (optical sampling and switching) and transmission experiments for high-capacity fiber optic systems. In future ultra-high bit-rate optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) systems, one of the key requirements is to develop reliable optical pulse sources that can generate high quality optical pulses. 2. 2. Modeling and Compensation of Polarization Effects in Fiber-Optic Communication Systems

    Author : Cristian Bogdan Czegledi; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nonlinear compensation; Channel model; model-based; polarization demultiplexing; polarization-mode dispersion; polarization drift; backpropagation; PMD; DBP;

    Abstract : Optical communication systems that exploit the orthogonality between two polarizations of light convey information over optical fibers by modulating data over the two polarizations. In an idealized scenario, the two polarizations propagate through the fiber without interfering. READ MORE

  3. 3. Optical Phase Conjugation and All-Optical Demultiplexing using Four-Wave Mixing in Dispersion Shifted Fibers

    Author : Per Olof E Hedekvist; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; dispersion compensation; nonlinear fiber optics; high-speed communication; four-wave mixing; parametric amplification; noise figure; wavelength conversion; optical phase conjugation; all-optical demultiplexer; mid-span spectral inversion;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with two applications of four-wave mixing in optical dispersion-shifted fibers; optical phase conjugation and all-optical switching. The work is a part of an effort to study the upgradability of the existing fiber plant, which is of large economic interest. READ MORE

  5. 5. All-Optical Switching with the Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror

    Author : Bengt-Erik Olsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the theory and applications of the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). Novel methods to restore and filter optical data as well as generate high peak power optical pulses using the NOLM are demonstrated. READ MORE
