    Abstract : The failure rate of restorative treatment in primary teeth was studied in a cohort of children born in 1981 and related to caries diagnosis, prevalence and distribution on different tooth surfaces, and compared with a cohort of children born in 1971. Concurrently, the longevity of composite resin in modified Class 2 cavities in primary molars was followed up and the resistance of deciduous and permanent enamel to acid adjacent to composite resin and glass polyalkeonate cement (GPA) was tested in vitro.     Abstract : In randomized parallel longitudinal studies conducted in Norway between 1969 and 1995, and Sri Lanka between 1970 and 1990 the initiation and progression of periodontal disease was investigated. The two groups showed geographical, racial, cultural, socioeconomic and educational differences, and they represented extremes as to perceived severity of periodontal disease, general health care delivery systems and to dental care.   5. 5. Children's dental health in Europe : an epidemiological investigation of 5- and 12-year-old children from eight EU countries

    Abstract : This thesis is based on a cross-sectional comparative study of dental health treatment needs and attitudes to dental care in groups of 5- and 12-year-old children from the following eight cities in respective EU countries: Athens-Greece, Berlin-Germany, Cork-lreland, Dundee-Scotland, Gent Belgium, Sassari-Italy, Stockholm-Sweden and Valencia-Spain. A total of 3,200 children, 200 in each age group, were clinically examined by well-calibrated dentists, the parents completing a questionnaire on dental habits, parental and children's attitudes to dental care, smoking habits and parental occupations.
