1. On the reporting of dental health, time for dental care, and the treatment panorama : Methodological studies of measuring and analysing dental care outcomes within a Swedish Public Dental Service organization
Abstract : The thesis included five methodological studies and one caries epidemiological investigation, the general aim being to study how to measure and report dental health, time for dental care, treatment panorama, and dental care outcomes, within a Public Dental Service organization. The specific aims were to monitor dental clinic activities using a time study method, to apply time study results of a dental health-related patient group system for the 3-19 year age groups, and to compare time study results with corresponding results from computerized systems used for reporting dental care. 2. Nutrition and health in infancy and childhood : an epidemiological approach to the assessment of dietary habits, their determinants and implications
Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to describe the distribution of feeding habits and dietary habits of Swedish children of different ages, to search for determinants of the observed distributions and to analyse some possible implications of those habits regarding health and growth. The present results emanate from a longitudinal study of feeding, growth and development of 312 infants and from a cross-sectional study on the dietary habits of 738 children aged 4,8 and 13 years. 3. Dental coping strategies and dental anxiety: Adaptive and maladaptive strategies among adult patients with regular or irregular dental care
Abstract : Abstract The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the reported use of coping strategies in connection with dental treatment among adult patients with dental anxiety and regular or irregular dental care. The specific aims of the four papers were (I) to develop a questionnaire for assessing coping strategies in the dental treatment situation and to evaluate its psychometric properties; (II) to further investigate and evaluate the newly constructed Dental Coping Strategy Questionnaire (DCSQ-15); (III) to investigate the relationship between the use of dental coping strategies in DCSQ-15, emotional distress and sociodemographic factors; (IV) to generate a conceptual framework explaining the main concerns of patients with dental anxiety who, despite their fear, participate in regular dental treatment, in order to acquire a deeper understanding of what they do to manage the dental-treatment situation. 4. The Role of gingivitis in the loss of periodontal attachment and teeth
Abstract : In randomized parallel longitudinal studies conducted in Norway between 1969 and 1995, and Sri Lanka between 1970 and 1990 the initiation and progression of periodontal disease was investigated. The two groups showed geographical, racial, cultural, socioeconomic and educational differences, and they represented extremes as to perceived severity of periodontal disease, general health care delivery systems and to dental care.
