  1. 1. Role of Endogenous BDNF and NT3 for Synaptic Transmission and Plasticity in the Dentate gyrus

    Author : Klara Olofsdotter; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; hippocampus; dentate gyrus; GABA; glutamate; synaptic transmission; synaptic plasticity; Brain-derived neurotrophic factor; neurotrophin 3; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; Neurology; electrophysiology; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi;

    Abstract : The neurotrophins, notably brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin 3 (NT3), modulate synaptic transmission and synaptic plasticity in the adult mammalian brain. Recent data suggest that neurotrophins might be mediators of activity-dependent synaptic plasticity. READ MORE

  2. 2. Mechanisms of Hyperexcitability in the Kindling Model of Epilepsy

    Author : Eskil Elmer; Sektion IV; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; Neurology; Plasticity; Dentate gyrus; Mossy fibers; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Epilepsy is a syndrome characterized by recurring attacks of sudden, excessive and synchronous discharge in populations of cerebral neurons. Kindling is an animal model for complex partial epilepsy, and is particularly useful for studies on the development of the abnormal excitability underlying the generation and spread of epileptic seizures. 3. 3. Synaptic Integration of Hippocampal Neurons Generated in the Adult Brain: Influence of a Pathological Environment

    Author : Katherine Jakubs; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Neurologi; synaptic plasticity; GABA; glutamate; GFP; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; hippocampus; dentate gyrus; neurogenesis; LPS; inflammation; epilepsy; SE; patch-clamp;

    Abstract : The adult brain constantly produces new neurons from endogenous neural progenitor cells located in at least two regions, the subgranular zone (SGZ) in dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, and the subventricular zone (SVZ). Major efforts are underway to discover the functional significance of new neurons in the adult brain. READ MORE

  4. 4. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke

    Author : Andreas Arvidsson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stereology; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; BrdU; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; subventricular zone; striatum; dentate gyrus; neuronal replacement; neuronal survival; Focal cerebral ischemia; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor;

    Abstract : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 5. 5. Behavior and cytogenesis following irradiation or isoflurane exposure to the developing brain

    Author : Niklas Karlsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; radiotherapy; isoflurane; anesthesia; hippocampus; neurogenesis; memory; learning; intellicage; dentate gyrus; trace fear conditioning; open field; object recognition;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the effects of an anesthetic agent, isoflurane, on the young brain and resulting behavioral effects were investigated. Anesthesia is commonly used in young children during surgery or other procedures associated with pain or discomfort. READ MORE
