  1. 1. Exploring the diversity and evolution of giant viruses in deep sea sediments using genome-resolved metagenomics

    Author : Disa Bäckström; Thijs J. G. Ettema; Anna J. Szekely; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Metagenomics; binning; viruses; NCLDV; Megavirales; viral evolution.;

    Abstract : Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on this planet, which is impressive considering that they are completely dependent on their hosts for reproduction. Recently the idea of what viruses are has changed dramatically, with the discovery of giant viruses that belong to the Nucleocytoplasmic Large DNA Viruses (NCLDV), such as Mimiviridae, Marseilleviridae, and the proposed families Pandoraviruses, and Pithoviruses. Abstract : Background and aimsHeart failure (HF) is a major cause of serious morbidity and death in the population and one of the leading medical causes of hospitalization among people older than 60 years. The aim of this thesis was to describe how to create and how to analyze a Heart Failure Registry with emphasis on Anemia and Quality of Life. READ MORE

  3. 3. Obesity and Increased Susceptibility : Role of FTO and MGAT1 Genetic Variants

    Author : Josefin A Jacobsson; Robert Fredriksson; Helgi B Schiöth; Sadaf Farooqi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obesity; BMI; SNP; haplotype; association study; FTO; MGAT1; Pharmacology; Farmakologi; Farmakologi; Pharmacology;

    Abstract : Obesity is a complex and a highly individualized disease and the molecular mechanisms behind this disorder need to be better elucidated. Identification of genes and genetic variants that are involved provide opportunities to establish a genetic understanding of the disease. READ MORE

  4. 4. Lipids and Endothelium-Dependent Vasodilation

    Author : Peter Steer; Lars Lind; Per Tornvall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Atherosclerosis; endothelium; vasodilation; nitric oxide; fatty acid; meal; diet; lipoprotein; cyclooxygenase; diclophenac; L-arginine; LDL; human; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; Internal Medicine; Internmedicin;

    Abstract : Impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDV) is associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease as well as several of its risk factors. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate how lipids influence EDV in the vascular bed of the human forearm. READ MORE

  5. 5. Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha : dependent and independent regulation of hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia

    Author : Camilla Halvarsson; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Mikael Sigvardsson; Kamil Kranc; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis has studied the role of low oxygen levels, or hypoxia, in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and how, at the molecular level, it regulates stem cell maintenance and protects against oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). HSCs reside within the bone marrow in specific niches created by a unique vascularized environment, which is suggested to be hypoxic and crucial for HSCs by maintaining a quiescent state of cell cycle and by redirecting metabolism away from the mitochondria to glycolysis.
