1. Leaching of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using a Column Method
Abstract : Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic pollutants of great environmental concern, due to their toxicity, carcinogenicity and long persistence in the environment. To determine the potential risk associated with PAHs released from contaminated soil or waste materials, knowledge is required on the leachable concentrations of PAHs and the amounts available for release. 2. Treatment of arsenic contaminated drinking water from the sources around the gold mining areas of Geita and Mara, Tanzania : Removal efficiency of locally available materials, bauxite, gypsum and magnesite
Abstract : In recent years, high arsenic (As) levels of about 300 µg/L have been reported around the gold mining areas of Geita and Mara regions within the Lake Victoria basin (LVB) in Tanzania. During a sampling campaign at Geita and Mara, the groundwater and surface water samples revealed the presence of high As concentrations as well as Fe and sulfide. READ MORE

3. Adsorption of Metallic Ions onto Chitosan : Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies
Abstract : Equilibrium isotherms and the adsorption kinetics of heavy metals onto chitosan were studied experimentally. Chitosan, a biopolymer produced from crustacean shells, has applications in various areas, particularly in drinking water and wastewater treatment due to its ability to remove metallic ions from solutions. 4. Moisture Conditions in High Performance Concrete. Mathematical Modelling and Measurements
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis has been focused on developing a model to calculate the moisture conditions in concrete of low water/binder ratio (W/B) which is normally used in high performance concrete. To do this, the moisture conditions in high performance concrete have been studied, from a very early age. READ MORE

5. Redistribution of moisture and ions in cement based materials
Abstract : There were two principal objectives for this thesis. The first was to develop a methodology and evaluation model of moisture redistribution in order to make the future relative humidity in a screeded concrete slab predictable. The second objective was to develop a method to determine the critical humidity for ion transport in concrete. READ MORE
