17. Analysis of rail breaks and insulated joint deterioration
Abstract : The thesis deals with fatigue related issues in the field of railway mechanics. In particular rail breaks and deterioration of insulating joints are investigated. The study is largely motivated by plans to increase allowed axle loads in Sweden. READ MORE

18. Mechanical track deterioration due to lateral geometry irregularities
Abstract : This thesis deals with how a degraded track geometry influences further degradation of the geometry and the formation of rolling contact fatigue (RCF) and wear of rails. The overall objective is optimisation of railway maintenance. For this, further understanding and quantification of the deterioration of track components are needed. READ MORE

19. Implication of chemical deterioration on mechanical performance of wood
Abstract : The oak wood of the 17th century warship Vasa has shown significant changes in the chemical and mechanical properties as compared to recent oak. The most important factors contributing to these changes are the incorporation of iron compounds during waterlogging and the uptake of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in the course of the preservation treatment. 20. Microbially induced concrete degradation in subsea tunnels - Community structure of biofilms from sprayed reinforced concrete in the Oslofjord tunnel
Abstract : Microbially induced concrete deterioration has been discovered in several Norwegian subsea tunnels with significant disintegration of the calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and steel fibre corrosion in areas with leakages of saline groundwater. Complex microbial biofilm activity together with abiotic attack from saline ground water, with high concentrations of Cl−, SO42−, Mg2+ and HCO3−, are responsible for the degradation in the specific subsea tunnel environment.
