1. The diapause switch : Evolution of alternative developmental pathways in a butterfly
Abstract : Diapause decision is a classic example of a threshold switch mechanism with cascading effects on morphology, behaviour and life-history traits. This thesis addresses the downstream effects of the insect diapause switch, with the main focus on pathway-specific regulation of life-history traits, using the speckled wood butterfly (Pararge aegeria) as a study species. 2. Mating type switching and transcriptional silencing in Kluyveromyces lactis
Abstract : To explore the similarities and differences of regulatory circuits among budding yeasts, we characterized the role of unscheduled meiotic gene expression 6 (UME6) and a novel mating type switching pathway in Kluyveromyces lactis. We found that Ume6 was required for transcriptional silencing of the cryptic mating-type loci HMLα and HMRa. READ MORE

3. Spinal Control of Locomotion : Developmental and Functional Aspects
Abstract : Neuronal networks are the central functional units of the nervous system. Knowledge about the identity of participating neurons and the assembly of these during development is crucial for the understanding of CNS function. READ MORE

4. Control of early development of the lens and the retina
Abstract : The nervous system is composed of two separate compartments, the central and the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) composed mainly of sensory organs transmits sensory information to the central nervous system (CNS) comprising the brain and the spinal cord. READ MORE

5. Controlled auxin biosynthesis and transport are important for developmental decisions in the early diverging land plant Physcomitrella patens
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to increase our understanding of the importance of the plant hormone auxin in land plant evolution. The role of a number of auxin regulatory network components in developmental decisions during the haploid phase of the life cycle of the model moss Physcomitrella patens, which belongs to the early diverging bryophyte group of land plants, was investigated.
