  1. 1. Islet hormonal hypersecretion and metformin’s effect on islet hormonal secretion studied in vitro and in vivo

    Author : Quan Wen; Anders Forslund; Hannes Manell; Hjalti Kristinsson; Lisa Juntti-Berggren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; alpha cell; carboxypeptidase E; childhood obesity; DRP-1; free fatty acids; glucagon secretion; glucose metabolism; glucose stimulated insulin secretion; human islets; hyperinsulinemia; metformin; mitochondrial fission; oral glucose tolerance test OGTT ; prohormone convertase; proinsulin; proinsulin to insulin ratio PI:I ;

    Abstract : Childhood obesity has surged globally. Elevated levels of free fatty acids contribute to hyperinsulinemia, hyperproinsulinemia, and hyperglucagonemia connected with both obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Metformin has beneficial effects on islets by influencing metabolism and reducing stress-induced cell death. READ MORE

  2. 2. Causes and consequences of hyperglycemia and glycosuria

    Author : Emilia Ottosson Laakso; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes is one of the world’s major challenges today. Over 400 million people around the globe are diagnosed with diabetes and the consequences to the individual patient and health care systems are significant. READ MORE

  3. 3. Pharmacoepidemiologic Studies of Diabetes Mellitus - with special reference to - Glucose Control and Prognosis of Type 2 Diabetes

    Author : Jonny Olsson; Samhällsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetology; secreting systems; Endocrinology; cohort study; longitudinal study; cross-sectional study; mortality; diabetes mellitus; Pharmacoepidemiology; prevalence; type 2 diabetes; diabetes costs; short-term sick-leave; premature retirement; production losses; inpatient care; glycaemic control; fasting blood glucose; oral antihyperglycaemic agents; sulphonylurea; metformin; insulin; combination treatment; drug utilization; prescribed daily doses; safety; effectiveness; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : The efficacy and safety of antihyperglycaemic drugs have been evaluated in one American and one British randomized clinical trial, which have given contradictory results. The positive results of the latter may be more convincing as it included a greater number of patients and as its duration was longer. READ MORE

  4. 4. Glucagon Counter-Regulation to Hypoglycemia During Incretin-Based Therapy

    Author : Johan Farngren; Lund Medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Incretin; DPP-4; GLP-1; Glucagon; Hypoglycemia; Diabetes;

    Abstract : Incretin-based therapy is associated with low risk of hypoglycemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) possibly due to its glucose-dependency in stimulating insulin secretion and a sustained glucagon response during hypoglycemia. This is of special relevance when it is combined with insulin or given to elderly patients since both insulin therapy and high age are associated with impaired glucagon counter-regulation. READ MORE

  5. 5. A Longitudinal Study of Diabetes Mellitus : With Special Reference to Incidence and Prevalence, and to Determinants of Macrovascular Complications and Mortality

    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Diabetes mellitus; clinical epidemiology; longitudinal study; prevalence; incidence; mortality; macrovascular complications; pharmacological diabetes treatment; hypertension treatment; screening; Family Medicine; Allmänmedicin;

    Abstract : Objectives. To investigate diabetes prevalence, incidence, mortality trends, the effects of hyperglycaemia and blood pressure, diabetes and hypertension treatment, and the effect of screening detection on total and cardiovascular disease (CVD), myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke incidence.Study population and methods.
