    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; DTH; oestradiol; corticosteroids; T cells; SCID mice; adoptive transfer; thymus; spleen.;

    Abstract : Recent epidemiological, clinical and experimental evidence have suggested that steroid hormones play an important role in immune responses and in immune-mediated diseases. Many autoimmune diseases are treated with corticosteroids. READ MORE

  2. 7. The Human Pancreatic Islet Methylome and Its Role in Type 2 Diabetes

    Author : Tasnim Dayeh; Diabetes - epigenetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CpG-SNP; glucagon secretion; insulin secretion; human pancreatic islets; DNA methylation; Epigenetics;

    Abstract : Islet dysfunction is central to the development and progression of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Epigenetic modifications are essential for establishing and maintaining cell identity and function in normal circumstances. Exposure to adverse environmental factors may alter the epigenome, and result in changes of gene expression and the resulting phenotype. READ MORE

    Abstract : Background Animal models can be used to mimic human conditions of psychopathology, and also as pre-clinical models to evaluate candidate drugs. With hormonal treatment it is possible to produce behavior in the rat which corresponds to the mental symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), and pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). READ MORE

    Abstract : The pancreas is a specialised multipurpose organ, that can be separated into two major compartments: endocrine and exocrine. The exocrine part makes up the majority of the organ volume and functions to secrete digestive enzymes into the small intestine. READ MORE

  5. 10. Inhibition of 11 ß-HSD. Hemodynamic and hormonal response induced by liquorice

    Author : Helga A Sigurjónsdóttir; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 11 ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase; glycyrrhetinic acid; liquorice; hypertension; gender; androgen hormones;

    Abstract : Introduction: The enzyme 11 ß-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenas (11 ß-HSD) type 2 that converts the active hormone cortisol to the inactive cortisone is inhibited by glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), the active substance in liquorice. This leads to hypertension, hypokalaemia and sodium- and fluid retention, the syndrome of pseudo-hyperaldosteronism. READ MORE
