  1. 6. Identification and imaging of lipids in tissues using TOF-SIMS

    Author : Ylva Magnusson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : mass spectrometry; lipids; fatty acids; diacylglycerols; triacylglycerols; TOF-SIMS; adipose tissue; aortic wall; skeletal muscle; obesity; principal component analysis;

    Abstract : Introduction: Normal lipid metabolism in the adipose tissue, skeletal muscle and aortic wall is important for the physiological function of these tissues. Dyslipidemia that is often associated with intake of high energy diet and sedentary lifestyles can lead to the development of insulin resistance and cardiovascular diseases. READ MORE

  2. 7. Solid-State NMR Characterization of Lipid Membranes

    Author : Vasco Castro; Arnold Maliniak; Göran Lindblom; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solid-State NMR; Membranes; Lipids; Glycolipids; Local Anesthetics; Hydration; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry; fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the study of lipid bilayer systems by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. Two-dimensional 1H-13C separated local field experiments under magic-angle spinning were employed to investigate structural and dynamical modifications of cell membranes, resulting from the addition of compounds with some biological relevance. 3. 8. Bioactive Lipids in Nociception

    Author : Anna Ermund; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : Cannabinoids; Anandamide; AM404; 2-Arachidonoylglycerol; Acetaminophen; Cyclooxygenase; Nocicieption; TRPV1;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on bioactive lipids as (1) metabolites of the widely used antipyretic and analgesic drug acetaminophen and (2) activators of the ion channel TRPV1, an important downstream target for inflammatory mediators, in the phospholipase C (PLC)/TRPV1 signaling pathway. Evidence is presented for a fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH)-dependent fatty acid conjugation of p-aminophenol, a known acetaminophen metabolite, to form the potent TRPV1 activator AM404 in the central nervous system. 4. 9. Membrane interactions of glycosyltransferases

    Author : Jobst Liebau; Lena Mäler; Christofer Lendel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lipid; bicelle; glycosyltransferase; NMR; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Abstract : Many important biological processes occur near or in membranes. The role of membranes is not merely confined to compartmentalization, they also form the matrix for membrane associated proteins and are of functional importance. Membrane associated proteins on the other hand require specific membrane properties for proper function. READ MORE

  5. 10. Candidate gene effects on beef quality

    Author : Marie Ekerljung; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The contribution of five candidate genes to the variation in meat tenderness, pH, colour, marbling and water holding capacity (WHC) was analysed in muscle samples from 243 young bulls of Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Limousin, or Simmental breed, raised in Swedish commercial herds. The animals were genotyped for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes encoding calpain 1 (CAPN1:c. READ MORE
