21. Icodextrin metabolism in peritoneal dialysis : clinical and experimental studies
Abstract : Icodextrin (ICO, or polyglucose) is an effective osmotic agent for peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients (pts). ICO is a soluble polymeric form of glucose with an average molecular 'weight range from 13,000 to 19,000 dalton. Glucose is absorbed from the peritoneal cavity by diffusion. READ MORE

22. Mathematical modeling of fluid and solute transport in peritoneal dialysis
Abstract : Optimization of peritoneal dialysis schedule and dialysis fluid composition needs, among others, methods for quantitative assessment of fluid and solute transport. Furthermore, an integrative quantitative description of physiological processes within the tissue, which contribute to the net transfer of fluid and solutes, is necessary for interpretation of the data and for predictions of the outcome of possible intervention into the peritoneal transport system. 23. Icodextrin metabolism in peritoneal dialysis : clinical and experimental studies
Abstract : Icodextrin is a glucose polymer which is used as osmotic agent to provide sustained ultrafiltration (UF) during the long (8-16 hours) dwell in end-stage renal disease patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). The aims of this thesis were to study: the metabolism of icodextrin in the peritoneal cavity and in the circulation of PD patients and non-uremic rats, the role of alpha-amylase in its hydrolysis, and the rate of breakdown of a synthetic maltoheptaose (G7) ex vivo which we propose as a novel measure of amylase mediated oligosaccharide metabolism. 24. Hyperparathyroidism and parathyroidectomy in patients on renal replacement therapy
Abstract : Background. Secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT) is characterized by over function of the parathyroid glands and disturbances in mineral metabolism as a result of renal failure. It is common among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and it often persists after successful renal transplantation. READ MORE

25. From novice towards self-care expert : studies of self-care among persons using advanced medical technology at home
Abstract : The use of advanced medical technology at home has increased in most industrialized countries. The overall aim of this thesis was to develop knowledge of self-care and transition and issues that influence daily life and health among persons using advanced medical technology at home. READ MORE
