  1. 1. Electronic and magnetic properties of Tsai quasicrystals and their approximants under pressure

    Author : Fernand Denoel; Roland Mathieu; Vassilios Kapaklis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tsai quasicrystal; high pressure; diamond anvil cell; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Abstract : Quasicrystals constitute a special category of crystals exhibiting long-range order without periodicity. This strange feature allows them to exhibit rotational symmetries prohibited in regular crystals, such as 5-, 8-, 10- or 12-fold symmetry. Amongst them, icosahedral quasicrystals are the only type that is aperiodic along all 3 dimensions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Thermal Conductivity of Materials under Conditions of Planetary Interiors

    Author : Zuzana Konôpková; Peter Lazor; Vitali Prakapenka; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; iron; high pressures-high temperatures; thermal conductivity; diamond anvil cell; laser-heating; planetary cores; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : The presented thesis focuses on study of transport and thermoelastic properties of materials under conditions of planetary interiors by means of high-pressure experimental tools and finite element modeling, and their role in the dynamics and states of cores of terrestrial planets. Experiments in laser-heated diamond anvil cell (LHDAC) in combination with numerical simulations of heat transfer in DAC are shown to yield information on thermal conductivity of a pressurized sample. 3. 3. Calorimetry under extreme conditions

    Author : Neha Kondedan; Andreas Rydh; Ali Elshaari; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nanocalorimetry; Diamond anvil cell; Specific heat; Thermometry; Quasicrystals; Solid State Physics; fasta tillståndets fysik;

    Abstract : This licentiate thesis presents developments of nanocalorimetry systems tailored for use under extreme conditions such as high pressure, intense magnetic fields, and low temperature. Nanocalorimetry is a powerful approach to study strongly correlated systems like superconductors, heavy fermions, and quantum materials with non-trivial magnetic or electronic properties, materials with emergent magnetic orders, as well as quasicrystals. 4. 4. Experimental investigation of hydrocarbon formation and transformation under Earth´s upper mantle conditions

    Author : Anton Kolesnikov; Vladimir Kutcherov; Bertil Sundqvist; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; theory of deep abiotic petroleum origin; natural gas; hydrocarbons; methane; ethane; graphite; hydrogen; high pressure; high temperature; CONAC; BARS; diamond anvil cell; Raman; X-ray; gas chromatography; Engineering mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : The theory of the abyssal abiotic petroleum origin considers oil and natural gas to begenerated in the Earth’s upper mantle. Hydrocarbons migrate further through the deep faults into the Earth’s crust, where they can form oil and gas deposits in any kind of rock in any kind of structural position. READ MORE

  5. 5. Optical and Raman Spectroscopic Studies on H2O at High Pressure

    Author : Sara Nanna Kristina Sundberg; Peter Lazor; Oleg Kuskov; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; H2O; diamond anvil cell; equations of state; Raman spectroscopy; interferometry; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : In this thesis, volumetric, optical and vibrational properties of H2O were studied at high pressures by combining techniques of Raman spectroscopy, interferometry and optical imaging. Pressures up to 7 GPa were generated in the diamond anvil cell (DAC), entering the stability fields of liquid water and ices VI, VII and VIII. READ MORE
