  1. 1. Bile Acid Induced Diarrhoea Pathophysiological and Clinical Aspects

    Author : Antal Bajor; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : Diarrhoea; bile acid transport; bile acid synthesis; 75SeHCAT reproducibility; C4; budesonide; collagenous colitis; in vitro; malabsorption; ASBT; intestinal secretion; potential difference; manometry;

    Abstract : A common cause for referral to gastroenterologists is chronic watery diarrhoea. Approximately 40% of these patients have idiopathic bile acid malabsorption (BAM) ? a condition with unknown aetiology. The 75SeHCAT test, which correlates inversely with faecal excretion and hepatic synthesis of bile acids, is used to diagnose BAM. READ MORE

  2. 2. On the role of bile acids in chronic diarrhoea

    Author : Kjell-Arne Ung; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : Diarrhoea; bile acid malabsorption; steatorrhoea; collagenous colitis; lymphocytic colitis; cholestyramine; long-term; histopathology; symptoms; ileal resection;

    Abstract : Bile acids which promote lipid absorption are actively reabsorbed in the distal ileum. Bile acid malabsorption (BAM) and microscopic colitis (lymphocytic and collagenous) are both associated with chronic watery diarrhoea. READ MORE

  3. 3. Lactobacilli in the normal microbiota and probiotic effects of Lactobacillus plantarum

  4. 4. Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, EHEC.Microbiological diagnosis, characterisation and clinical bacteriological aspects

    Author : Christina Welinder-Olsson; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : Escherichia coli; EHEC; VTEC; verocytotoxin; PFGE; EHEC-hemolysin; aerobactin; diarrhoea; HUS;

    Abstract : Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) constitutes a group of E. coli that in the past two decades has been the cause of several outbreaks of gastrointestinal disease. The microorganism causes hemorrhagic colitis (HC) and haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in 5-10% of the patients, 30% of the HUS patients develop remaining kidney injuries. READ MORE

  5. 5. Acute febrile illness in preschool children in Zanzibar - Infectious aetiologies, diagnosis and treatment

    Abstract : Background: A majority of the three million children in Africa that do not survive their fifth birthday die from infections that often start as a seemingly uncomplicated febrile illness. Primary health care workers frequently encounter febrile children with a negative malaria rapid diagnostic test (mRDT), in particular in places like Zanzibar with a considerable decline in malaria prevalence.
