  1. 1. Wind Power and Natural Disasters

    Author : Jon Olauson; Mikael Bergkvist; Stefan Ivanell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Wind power; Natural disasters; Hybrid energy system; Meteorological model; Statistical model; Variability; Wind power integration;

    Abstract : Wind power can be related to natural disasters in several ways. This licentiate thesis gives some background and introduces four papers devoted to two aspects of this relation. The first section looks into how small-scale wind energy converters (WECs) could be used to generate power after a natural disaster. READ MORE

  2. 2. On design and analysis of synchronous permanent magnet machines for field-weakening operation in hybrid electric vehicles

    Author : Freddy Magnussen; Chandur Sadarangani; Barrie Mecrow; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Applied mechanics; permanent magnet machines; field-weakening; hybrid electric vehicles; soft magnetic composites; fractional pitch concentrated windings; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : A regular vehicle of today is equipped with an internal combustion engine that runs on either gasoline or diesel, which are fossil fuels from oil reserves that are millions of years old. In all types of combustion processes carbon dioxide and several other emissions are produced. READ MORE

  3. 3. Study into the Potential and Feasibility of a Standalone Solar-Wind Hybrid Electric Energy Supply System

    Author : Getachew Bekele; Björn Palm; Philip Eames; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Wind Speed; Sunshine Duration; Solar Radiation; Feasibility Study; Standalone System; Solar-Wind Hybrid; Thermal energy engineering; Termisk energiteknik;

    Abstract : The tendency to use renewable energy resources has grown continuouslyover the past few decades, be it due to fear over warnings of globalwarming or because of the depletion and short life of fossil fuels or evenas a result of the interest which has developed among researchers doingscientific research into it. This work can be considered as joining any ofthese groups with an objective of giving electric light to the poorpopulation living in one of the poorest nations in the world. READ MORE

  4. 4. CFD-based Analysis of Combustion Processes in a Free-Piston Diesel Engine

    Author : Miriam Bergman; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; chemical kinetics; Diesel; homogeneous charge compression ignition HCCI ; free-piston; equivalence ratio vs. temperature maps; computational fluid dynamics CFD ; surrogate fuel;

    Abstract : The Free Piston Engine (FPE) which is capable of operating in a variable compression ratio mode, allows flexible auto-ignition control on a cycle-to-cycle basis without any hardware modifications. In this study combustion processes in an FPE were examined using the KIVA-3V CFD code with detailed chemical kinetics (305 reactions among 70 species) of a Diesel surrogate fuel incorporated. 5. 5. The Stirling engine as a part of a hybrid power system : a study of applications in rural areas of Bolivia

    Author : Luis Antonio Choque Campero; Per Lundqvist; Carl-Johan Fohelholm; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Energy Technology; Energiteknik;

    Abstract : Rural electrification in developing countries has become one of the greatest challenges for achieving global access to electricity—one of the United Nation’s sustainable development goals. Governments, international entities and private companies are tasked with improving the quality of life for people and reducing environmentally harmful emissions. READ MORE
