11. Modeling and Characterization of nonlinear Materials for Protection of Optical Sensors
Abstract : This thesis concerns nonlinear materials and experimental techniques for optical power limiting applications. Theoretical models to analyze and simulate related measurements were studied. Two different numerical modeling tools for propagation of optical radiation through optically nonlinear media were developed. READ MORE

12. Distributed Signal Processing in Digital Substations : Integrating High Sampling Rate Measurements at the Process-Level
Abstract : Future power systems will be dominated by power electronic (PE) converter connected generation. This trend is primarily driven by the increasing penetration of wind power as well as the increasing integration of photovoltaic (PV) based generation. READ MORE

13. Causes and consequences of niche differentiation between color morphs of pygmy grasshoppers
Abstract : In this thesis, I used the color polymorphic pygmy grasshopper, Tetrix subulata, as a model system in order to investigate the degree of niche differentiation between alternative color morphs that are present within a single population. First, I hypothesized that individuals belonging to different color morphs differ in their innate food preference due to somewhat dissimilar physiology, and in their actual food consumption due in part to differential habitat use. 14. Human Endogenous Retroviruses: Studies on Transcriptional Activity and Genetic Variability
Abstract : Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are believed to be remains of germ-line infections that have become fixed in the population. They are involved in pathophysiological conditions, in mechanisms leading to infection protection, and directly in the physiology of the organism by participating in the regulation of cellular gene expression. 15. Towards Privacy Preserving Micro-data Analysis : A machine learning based perspective under prevailing privacy regulations
Abstract : Machine learning (ML) has been employed in a wide variety of domains where micro-data (i.e., personal data) are used in the training process. READ MORE
