6. A genomic approach to smooth muscle differentiation and diversity
Abstract : Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are a broad class of contractile cells that are found in a number of organs systems, including the vasculature, the urogenital system, the bronchi and the gastrointestinal tract. The two main functions exerted by SMCs are to provide contractile force and to synthesize structural components of the extracellular matrix. READ MORE

7. Recruitment, Differentiation, and Function of monocytes during Salmonella infection
Abstract : Monocytes are a heterogeneous population in the blood with an enormous plasticity whose fate and functions are dictated by the microenvironment. They are phenotypically and functionally related to neutrophils and dendritic cells (DCs) and share an overlapping expression pattern of surface molecules with these cells. READ MORE

8. Studies of molecular events during peripheral B cell differentiation
Abstract : This thesis focuses on molecular changes occuring during terminal B cell differentiation as well as on somatic hypermutation and the generation and maintenance of B cell memory. During T cell dependent immune responses the average affinity for the eliciting antigen increases with time. READ MORE

9. Derivation, propagation and differentiation of human stem and progenitor cells
Abstract : Neuronal loss is a common feature of many neurological disorders, including stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury. Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and hESC-derived neural progenitors (NPs) may provide a number of new ways for studying and treating diseases and injuries in the brain. READ MORE

10. Mitochondrial differentiation during the early development of the amphibian embryo
Abstract : Mitochondria from Xenopus laevis and Ambystoma mexica- num embryos between fertilization and the beginning of feeding were studied: the former with respect to metabolic behaviour, enzyme pattern and carrier activity, and the latter with respect to morphological parameters. The metabolic behaviour of mitochondria was studied by assessing the rates of oxygen uptake in presence of various substrates.
