1. Nanoplasmonics for solar cells
Abstract : The main source of our energy system, the fossil fuels, will eventually be depleted and also pose environmental and climate hazards. There is thus a need for alternative, renewable energy sources. Solar (photovoltaic) cells will play an important role as one of them. READ MORE

2. Hydrogen in nano-sized metals : Diffusion and hysteresis effects
Abstract : Metal hydrides can be used as hydrogen storage materials for fuel cells and batteries, and as sensors for detecting hydrogen gas. The use of metal hydrides for hydrogen storage can be hindered by poor kinetics and low capacity. Moreover, poor sensitivity, long recovery and response time, limit the applications of metal hydrides as hydrogen sensors. READ MORE

3. Analysis of Binding Events and Diffusion in Living Cells
Abstract : It is well known that diffusion is the main mode of transport in living cells, but the consequences of diffusion in a complex cellular environment are not generally appreciated. In this thesis, we have investigated several aspects of how diffusion properties influence the observability of cellular binding kinetics and how they can be used to obtain information about the environment of proteins and other molecules. 4. Stochastic Simulation of Multiscale Reaction-Diffusion Models via First Exit Times
Abstract : Mathematical models are important tools in systems biology, since the regulatory networks in biological cells are too complicated to understand by biological experiments alone. Analytical solutions can be derived only for the simplest models and numerical simulations are necessary in most cases to evaluate the models and their properties and to compare them with measured data. 5. Modeling of Hindered Diffusion in Gels
Abstract : Hindered diffusion occurs in the most different processes, as has been described in this thesis. It is very important to have an understanding of the influence of hindered diffusion on the mass transfer rate, especially when competing rate processes are acting simultaneously. READ MORE
