  1. 11. P-type ATPases studied by electron microscopy and two-dimensional crystallization

    Author : Kenneth Yijing Xian; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : electron microscopy; ion transport; membrane protein; P-type ATPase; two-dimensional crystallization;

    Abstract : Electron microscopy and two-dimensional crystallography have been used to study the molecular structures of the porcine renal Na+,K+-ATPase and the porcine gastric H+,K+-ATPase. In addition, morphological changes have been observed with electron cryomicroscopy from tubulovesicles in porcine gastric mucosae. READ MORE

  2. 12. Wettability of modified wood

    Author : Maziar Sedighi Moghaddam; Agne Swerin; M. Per Calessson; E.P. Magnus Wålinder; Callum Hill; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Wood; dimensional stability; dynamic wettability; surface chemistry; microstructure; swelling; multicycle Wilhelmy plate method; contact angle; sorption; acetylation; furfurylation; surface modification; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Despite many excellent properties of wood which make it suitable for many applications, it suffers from a number of disadvantages limiting its use. For instance, modification is needed to reduce water sorption and to improve decay resistance, dimensional stability and weathering performance. READ MORE

  3. 13. Moisture-induced stress and distortion of wood : A numerical and experimental study of wood's drying and long-term behaviour

    Author : Sara Florisson; Sigurdur Ormarsson; Johan Vessby; Kent Persson; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; analytical method; calibration; controlled climate; creep; distortion; experimental methodology; FEM; fibre orientation; mechano-sorption; moisture transport; natural climate; Norway spruce; numerical model; three-dimensional; timber beam; validation; wood; Byggteknik; Civil engineering; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : With the current advances made in three-dimensional modelling of wood, it is possible to provide an overall picture of moisture flow, and moisture-induced stress and deformations, whereas previously, experiments only provided local measurements. The main aim of the doctoral thesis is to investigate the possibilities of the developed three-dimensional numerical model to predict the behaviour of wood when simultaneously exposed to a mechanical load and a particular climate. 4. 14. Analysis and speciation of organic phosphorus in environmental matrices : Development of methods to improve 31P NMR analysis

    Author : Johan Vestergren; Gröbner Gerhard; Jurgen Schleucher; Ulrik Ilstedt; Per Persson; Reiner Giesler; Benjamin L. Turner; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for life on our planet. It is central in numerous biochemical processes in terrestrial and aqueous ecosystems including food production; and it is the primary growth-limiting nutrient in some of the world’s biomes. READ MORE

  5. 15. A structural study of ribokinase from Escherichia coli

    Author : Jill A. Sigrell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; ATP-binding; conformational changes; kinase; ribose; X-ray crystallography; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Ribokinase phosphorylates the abundant sugar ribose, using ATP in the presence of magnesium. The phosphorylation is the first reaction in ribose metabolism and the product, ribose-5-phosphate, can enter the pentose phosphate pathway and glycolysis. It can also be used in the synthesis of histidine and purines. READ MORE
