  1. 1. Diel vertical migration in marine dinoflagellates

    Author : Therese Jephson; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Key words: diel vertical migration; DVM; dinoflagellates; stratification; halocline; thermocline; behavior diel vertical migration; behavior;

    Abstract : Increasing precipitation and surface water temperature due to global change may strengthen stratification in coastal regions, which could influence the behavior of dinoflagellate diel vertical migration (DVM). DVM is a behavioral mechanism by which dinoflagellates can access photosynthetically active radiation near the surface, and nutrients at depth. READ MORE

  2. 2. Microbial evolution: patterns of diversity in aquatic protists

    Author : Ramiro Logares; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dinoflagellates; biodiversity; lakes; Evolution; diversification; microbes; biogeography;

    Abstract : Little is known about how microbes diversify in nature. In contrast to the more studied multicellular organisms, microbes can have a) huge population sizes, b) high reproductive rates and c) long-distance dispersal. These characteristics can affect their tempo and mode of diversification in ways that still need to be understood. READ MORE

  3. 3. The significance of sexuality and cyst formation in the life-cycles of four marine dinoflagellate species

    Author : Rosa Figueroa; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyst; Hydrobiology; akvatisk ekologi; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; sexuality.; meiosis; Lingulodinium polyedrum; life-cyle; limnologi; Marinbiologi; Gymnodinium nolleri; Gymnodinium catenatum; Alexandrium catenella; dinoflagellates;

    Abstract : Sexuality and cyst formation were studied in the marine dinoflagellate species Gymnodinium catenatum Graham, Gymnodinium nolleri Ellegaard ? Moestrup, Alexandrium catenella (Whedon et Kofoid) Balech, and Lingulodinium polyedrum (Stein) Dodge. The study included the morphological characterization of sexual stages and processes, the time and description of meiosis, the study of the length and regulation of the mandatory dormancy period of resting cysts, and the relationships among parental strains and cyst progeny at phenotypic and molecular levels. 4. 4. Effects of contaminant mixtures on marine zooplankton diversity and function

    Author : Christina Jönander; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zooplankton; copepods; ciliates; dinoflagellates; mixture toxicity; chemical mixtures; marine contaminants; biodiversity; reproduction; ULSFO; closed-loop scrubbers; exhaust gas cleaning systems;

    Abstract : Chemicals have important roles in our society and can be used as ingredients in personal care products, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, as well as be components of fuels used in cars or ships. More than 350 000 chemicals and mixtures have been registered for use, which only covers a part of all the chemicals that we may come into contact with. READ MORE

  5. 5. The novel sources of the neurotoxin BMAA in aquatic environments

    Author : Sandra Lage; Sara Jonasson Rydberg; Ulla Rasmussen; Ann-Sofi Rehnstam-Holm; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; β-N-methylamino-L-alanine; diatoms; dinoflagellates; shellfish; cockles; PST; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Neurotoxinet β -N-metylamino -L-alanin (BMAA) anses vara en potentiell miljöriskfaktor för utvecklingen av den neurodegenerativa sjukdomen amyotrofisk lateralskleros (ALS) och har en potentiell roll i flertalet andra neurodegenerativa sjukdomar. Sedan 2003, då det upptäcktes att BMAA produceras av den symbiotiska cyanobakterien Nostoc punctiforme  har flera andra BMAA producerande cyanobakteriearter identifierats. READ MORE
