  1. 1. Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins : Natural formation mechanisms and biota retention, maternal transfer, and effects

    Author : Kristina Arnoldsson; Peter Haglund; Patrik Andersson; Walter Vetter; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins; PBDDs; Baltic Sea; uptake; retention; maternal transfer; metabolism; bioavailability; natural formation; precursor; bromoperoxidase; bromophenol; photochemical transformation; oxidative coupling; hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers; Chemistry; Kemi; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDD) and dibenzofurans (PBDF) are a group of compounds of emerging interest as potential environmental stressors. Their structures as well as toxic responses are similar to the highly characterized toxicants polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins. READ MORE

  2. 2. New tools for sample preparation and instrumental analysis of dioxins in environmental samples

    Author : Lan Do; Peter Haglund; Staffan Lundstedt; Eric Reiner; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PCDD Fs; dioxins; pressurized liquid extraction; PLE; selective SPLE; modular M-PLE; soil; sediment; sludge; gas chromatography; new stationary phases; multivariate data analysis; selectivity; interaction; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs), two groups of structurally related chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, are of high concern due to their global distribution and extreme toxicity. Since they occur at very low levels, their analysis is complex, challenging and hence there is a need for efficient, reliable and rapid alternative analytical methods. READ MORE

  3. 3. Trace analysis of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with electron capture detection

    Author : Conny Danielsson; Peter Haglund; Karin Wiberg; Jean-Marie Dimandja; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography; GC × GC; µECD; PCDDs; PCDFs; dioxins; dioxin-like PCBs; Pressurized liquid extraction; PLE; PLE-C; food; feed; fly ash; soil; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs), two groups of struc-turally related chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, generally referred to as “dioxins” are of great concern due to their extreme toxicity and presence in all compartments of the environment. Since they occur at very low levels, their analysis is complex and challenging, and there is a need for cost-efficient, reliable and rapid analytical alternatives to the expensive methods in-volving use of gas chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS). 4. 4. Protein isolation from herring (Clupea harengus) using the pH-shift process - Protein yield, protein isolate quality and removal of food contaminants

    Author : Sofia Marmon; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; precipitation; acid; gelation; in vitro digestion; solubilization; herring; protein; salt solubility; pH; lipids; alkaline; transmission electron microscopy; dioxins;

    Abstract : Herring (Clupea harengus) contain valuable proteins but is difficult to process into high-quality foods due to its small size and high content of bones, heme-proteins and lipids. Herring is among the most abundant fish species in the world, but is currently utilized largely for fish meal and oil production. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fertility and female dietary exposure to persistent organochlorine compounds

    Author : Anna Axmon; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; industrial medicine; Yrkesmedicin; arbetsmiljömedicin; Public health; epidemiology; Folkhälsa; epidemiologi; Occupational health; DDE; DDT; dioxins; polychlorinated biphenyls; persistent organochlorine compounds; stillbirths; miscarriages; Fertility; time to pregnancy;

    Abstract : Persistent organochlorine compounds (POC), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and dioxins, are long-lived and highly lipophilic compounds which are present in all biota today. In Sweden, one of the major exposure routes for POC is through the consumption of fatty fish from the Baltic Sea, which is off the east coast of Sweden, and one of the most highly exposed populations is the fishermen's wives and sisters from the east coast.
