  1. 1. Moving thresholds : body narratives within the vicinity of gym and fitness culture

    Author : Greta Bladh; Jesper Andreasson; Linda Sandberg; Åsa Bäckström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; gender; gym and fitness; thresholds; body narrative; vulnerable inclusiveness; genusvetenskap; gender studies; Sociology; sociologi;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates thresholds that impede bodies from moving to, and within, gym and fitness sites. Thresholds are here understood as gendered social constructs and norms, which direct bodies in certain ways, and thus circumscribing potential movements and capabilities. READ MORE

  2. 2. Genetic Consequences of Dispersal and Social Behavior in Lions, Panthera leo

    Author : Goran Spong; Peter Waser; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Behavioral ecology; direct fitness; dispersal; inclusive fitness; Panthera leo; population genetics; sociality; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis combines behavioral observations of African lions (Panthera leo) with genetic analyses, in an attempt to clarify causes and consequences of lion group living. The numerous complex cooperative behaviors of lions present an excellent opportunity to investigate the evolution and maintenance of group living. READ MORE

  3. 3. Speciation - What Can be Learned from a Flycatcher Hybrid Zone?

    Author : Chris Wiley; Anna Qvarnström; Lars Gustafsson; Roger Butlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biology; speciation; reinforcement; fitness; postzygotic isolation; asymmetrical hybridization; hybrid zone; species recognition; mate choice; sexual selection; direct benefits; parasite resistance; delayed plumage maturation; Ficedula hypoleuca; Ficedula albicollis; flycatcher; Biologi;

    Abstract : Studies of hybrid zones offer important insights into the process of speciation. Much of the knowledge to be gained is dependent on an accurate estimation of the strength of pre- and post-zygotic isolation between hybridizing taxa. My results demonstrate that hybridization can variously affect different components of fitness. READ MORE

  4. 4. Dissecting the photosystem II light-harvesting antenna

    Author : Jenny Andersson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant physiology; antisense; Arabidopsis thaliana; chlorophyll; carotenoid; feedback de-excitation; fitness; LHC; NPQ; photosynthesis; state transitions; xanthophyll; Växtfysiologi; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Physiological Botany; fysiologisk botanik;

    Abstract : In photosynthesis, sunlight is converted into chemical energy that is stored mainly as carbohydrates and supplies basically all life on Earth with energy.In order to efficiently absorb the light energy, plants have developed the outer light harvesting antenna, which is composed of ten different protein subunits (LHC) that bind chlorophyll a and b as well as different carotenoids. 5. 5. Validity and reliability of a submaximal cycle ergometer test for estimation of maximal oxygen uptake

    Author : Frida Maria Eleonora Björkman; Örjan Ekblom; Tony Bohman; Åsa Tornberg; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Abstract : Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is the highest obtained rate of oxygen consumption during a physically intense dynamic whole-body activity. VO2max is an important factor for many types of physical performance, as well as a strong independent predictor of health and longevity. READ MORE
