  1. 1. Using a Social Semiotic Perspective to Inform the Teaching and Learning of Physics

    Author : Tobias Fredlund; Cedric Linder; David Wolfe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Social semiotics; semiotic resources; physics education research; interactive engagement; disciplinary affordance; disciplinary-relevant aspects; patterns of disciplinary-relevant aspects; the Variation Theory of Learning; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : This thesis examines meaning-making in three different areas of undergraduate physics: the refraction of light; electric circuits; and, electric potential and electric potential energy. In order to do this, a social semiotic perspective was constituted for the thesis to facilitate the analysis of meaning-making in terms of the semiotic resources that are typically used in the teaching and learning of physics. 2. 2. Learning physics with Controllable Worlds : Perspectives for examining and augmenting physics students' engagement with digital learning environments

    Author : Elias Euler; Bor Gregorcic; Cedric Linder; Michael C. Wittmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Controllable Worlds; digital learning environments; modeling; semi-formalisms; microworlds; social semiotics; conversation analysis; embodied cognition; disciplinary-relevant aspects; responsive teaching; variation theory; contrast; dimensions of variation; relevance structure; creativity; grounded theory; activity types; exploration; testing; engineering; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : In this thesis I present a collection of case studies involving small groups of participants using ‘Controllable Worlds’—i.e., a particular class of physics digital learning environment (DLE) including simulations, ‘microworlds,’ and educational games that provides users with control over manipulable virtual environments. 3. 3. Perspectives on the role of digital tools in students' open-ended physics inquiry

    Author : Elias Euler; Bor Gregorcic; Cedric Linder; Konrad Schönborn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; digital learning environments; modeling; semi-formalisms; microworlds; social semiotics; embodied cognition; disciplinary-relevant aspects; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : In this licentiate thesis, I present detailed case studies of students as they make use of simulated digital learning environments to engage with physics phenomena. In doing so, I reveal the moment-to-moment minutiae of physics students’ open-ended inquiry in the presence of two digital tools, namely the sandbox software Algodoo and the PhET simulation My Solar System (both running on an interactive whiteboard). 4. 4. On the analytical engagement of social semiotics and variation theory in physics education research

    Author : Moa Eriksson; Nationellt Resurscentrum för Fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Social semiotics; Variation theory; Relevance structure; Dimensions of variation; Semiotic resources; Fysicumarkivet A:2020:Eriksson;

    Abstract : In this licentiate thesis, I explore how two theoretical frameworks—social semiotics and the variation theory of learning—used in physics education research, can be fruitfully combined to obtain additional analytical tools for analysing student learning in introductory level university physics. Each theoretical framework has on their own, or together with other frameworks, been successfully applied for analysing both individual and collective learning, but the combination of the two has yet not been fully explored. 5. 5. Learning Physics through Transduction : A Social Semiotic Approach

    Author : Trevor Stanton Volkwyn; John Airey; Bor Gregorcic; Cedric Linder; David Brookes; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Introductory physics; transduction; interactive engagement; social semiotics; representational competence; probeware; mathematical tools; 1-D kinematics; coordinate systems; magnetic field; pedagogical affordance; disciplinary affordance; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis details the introduction of the theoretical distinction between transformation and transduction to Physics Education Research. Transformation refers to the movement of meaning between semiotic resources within the same semiotic system (e.g. READ MORE
