  1. 1. The density of rational points and invariants of genus one curves

    Author : Manh Hung Tran; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; genus one; discriminant; modular form; Elliptic curve; height; descent; determinantal representation; invariant; rational point; theta function.; determinant method;

    Abstract : The present thesis contains three papers dealing with two arithmetic problems on curves of genus one, which are closely related to elliptic curves. The first problem is to study the density of rational points presented in Papers I and II. READ MORE

  3. 3. Tropical aspects of real polynomials and hypergeometric functions

    Author : Jens Forsgård; Boris Shapiro; Grigory Mikhalkin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Amoeba; Tropical Geometry; Hypergeometric function; Geometry of zeros; Discriminant; Mathematics; matematik;

    Abstract : The present thesis has three main topics: geometry of coamoebas, hypergeometric functions, and geometry of zeros.First, we study the coamoeba of a Laurent polynomial f in n complex variables. We define a simpler object, which we call the lopsided coamoeba, and associate to the lopsided coamoeba an order map. READ MORE

  4. 4. Amoebas, Discriminants, and Hypergeometric Functions

    Author : Lisa Nilsson; Mikael Passare; Maurice Rojas; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; amoeba; coamoeba; discriminant; hypergeometric functions; Mellin transform; Algebra; geometry and mathematical analysis; Algebra; geometri och analys; Mathematics; matematik;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of six chapters. In Chapter 1 we give some historical background to the topic of the thesis together with the fundamental definitions and results that the thesis is based on. In Chapter 2 we study Mellin transforms of rational functions and investigate their analytic continuations. READ MORE

  5. 5. Feature Informativeness, Curse-of-Dimensionality and Error Probability in Discriminant Analysis

    Author : Tatjana Pavlenko; Matematisk statistik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistics; Matematik; Mathematics; feature selection; Discriminant analysis; feature informativeness; growing dimension assymptotics; operations research; operationsanalys; programmering; aktuariematematik; programming; actuarial mathematics; Statistik; Multivariate analysis; MATHEMATICS;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on four papers on high-dimensional discriminant analysis. Throughout, the curse-of-dimensionality effect on the precision of the discrimination performance is emphasized. A growing dimension asymptotic approach is used for assessing this effect and the limiting error probability are taken as the performance criteria. READ MORE
