  1. 6. Water in and on ionic materials : Structure, energetics, and vibrations

    Author : Getachew Kebede; Kersti Hermansson; Marie-Pierre Gaigeot; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DFT; dispersion interactions; OH stretching frequency; electric field; dipole moment; Hydrogen bond; ionic surfaces; ionic hydrates;

    Abstract : Many chemical and physical phenomena in nature, in industrial processes, and in our daily lives take place at water/solid interfaces. The aim of this thesis is to further our knowledge of such processes at a molecular level. READ MORE

  2. 7. Stress, Flow and Particle Transport in Rock Fractures

    Author : Tomofumi Koyama; Lanru Jing; Marc Boulon; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Numerical simulation; laboratory experiments; rock fracture; coupled stress-flow-tracer test; shear displacement; fluid flow; particle transport; finite element method FEM ; particle tracking method; Navier-Stokes equation; Reynolds equation; streamline velocity dispersion.; Geoengineering; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : The fluid flow and tracer transport in a single rock fracture during shear processes has been an important issue in rock mechanics and is investigated in this thesis using Finite Element Method (FEM) and streamline particle tracking method, considering evolutions of aperture and transmissivity with shear displacement histories under different normal stresses, based on laboratory tests. The distributions of fracture aperture and its evolution during shear were calculated from the initial aperture fields, based on the laser-scanned surface roughness features of replicas of rock fracture specimens, and shear dilations measured during the coupled shear-flow-tracer tests in laboratory performed using a newly developed testing apparatus in Nagasaki University, Nagasaki, Japan. 3. 8. Phosphorus transport and reduction in compact-bed filters : simulations and experiments

    Author : Amir Jourak; Andy George; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : Excessive release of phosphorus from the effluent of on-site sanitation facilities to the environment is one source of aquatic pollution. The primary effect of excess phosphorus in the aquatic environment is eutrophication. READ MORE

  4. 9. Surface Wave Testing of Pavements

    Author : Nils Rydén; Teknisk geologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; geographical and geological engineering; Hydrogeologi; teknisk geologi; teknisk geografi; Hydrogeology; inversion; guided waves; road; pavement; Surface waves; non-destructive testing;

    Abstract : A novel approach for surface wave testing of pavements is presented. It is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique that can be used to obtain the thickness and stiffness properties of the different layers in a pavement. READ MORE

  5. 10. Dynamic higher order equations for structural elements

    Author : Hossein Abadikhah; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Eigenfrequency; Micropolar; Series expansion; Beam; Plate equations; Torsion;

    Abstract : The subject of this thesis is to derive and evaluate governing equations and corresponding boundary conditions for solid isotropic cylinders and isotropic micropolar rectangular plates. This is achieved by a systematic power series expansion approach, by either adopting a generalized Hamilton's principle or a direct approach. READ MORE
