  1. 6. An Experimental Study on Melt Fragmentation, Oxidation and Steam Explosion during Fuel Coolant Interactions

    Author : Louis Manickam; Weimin Ma; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; severe accident; fuel coolant interactions; melt jet breakup; debris properties; steam explosion; oxidation; high-speed visualization; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Nordic type boiling water reactors (BWRs) adopt reactor cavity flooding as a severe accident mitigation strategy (SAMS) to achieve core melt fragmentation and long-term cooling of decay heat generating core debris. The qualification of this SAMS needs to address two main severe accident issues: debris bed coolability and steam explosion. READ MORE

  2. 7. Van der Waals density-functional description of polymers and other sparse materials

    Author : Jesper Kleis; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; softmatter; Density functional theory; polyethylene; van der Waals interaction; polymer crystal; nanotubes; DFT; sparse material systems; polymer interactions; polymer structure;

    Abstract : Polymers are abundant in nature --- rubber, tar and latex have been known to mankind for thousands of years. Early in the 20th century, a systematic synthesis of polymers was developed, but the great potential of synthesized polymers was recognized first during World War II. READ MORE

  3. 8. Mobility and emigration in butterflies

    Author : Karin Enfjäll; Olof Leimar; Michel Baguette; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Keywords: conspecific density; dispersal; evolution; flight-behaviour; information; sexual conflict; social interactions; Ethology and behavioural ecology; Etologi och beteendeekologi; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : Because of its implications for the survival of many species, dispersal plays a key role in conservation biology. A good knowledge about the different factors that influence dispersal decisions is crucial for the understanding of inter-population movements. READ MORE

  4. 9. Interactions of methane and carbon monoxide with platinum - Supported catalysts and chemical sensors

    Author : Elin Becker; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Periodic operation In situ spectroscopy; XAS; CO; Sensing mechanism; Low-temperature activity; XANES; Pt; Environmental catalysis; Support material; CH4; Chemical sensors;

    Abstract : This thesis aims at increasing the understanding of the interactions of methane and carbon monoxide with platinum in connection to catalysis and sensor technology for emission control. Specifically, the low-temperature oxidation of methane and carbon monoxide over supported platinum catalysts and the sensor response mechanism towards CO of platinum-based chemical field effect sensors were studied. 5. 10. Waves and instabilities in quantum plasmas

    Author : Shahid Ali; Padma Kant Shukla; Mattias Marklund; Jose Tito Mendonca; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Quantum mechanical effects; dusty plasma; linear and nonlinear waves; instabilities; nonlinear wave interactions; density gradients; magnetoplasmas.; Plasma physics; Plasmafysik;

    Abstract : The study of waves and instabilities in quantum plasmas is of fundamental importance for understanding collective interactions in superdense astrophysical objects, in high intense laser-plasma/solid-matter interactions, in microelectronic devices and metallic nanostructures. In dense quantum plasmas, there are new pressure laws associated with the Fermi-Dirac distribution functions and new quantum forces associated with the quantum Bohm potential and the Bohr magnetization involving electron ½ spin.
