  1. 1. Maturation of Clay Seals in Deep Bore Holes for Disposal of Radioactive waste : Theory and Experiments

    Author : Ting Yang; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; high-level radioactive waste; HLW; very deep borehole; VDH; disposal; saturation degree; water transport; maturation; model; shear strength; hydraulic conductivity; swelling pressure; homogenization; Geoteknik; Soil Mechanics;

    Abstract : KBS-3 and very deep borehole (VDH) concepts are two major types of long-term geologicaldisposal methods for high-level radioactive waste (HLW) isolating from the biosphere. TheKBS-3V concept for isolating the HLW at the depth of 400-500 m, is the officially proposedoption in Sweden and has been the subject of considerable research in the past few decades,while the VDH concept was considered as an option in the 1950s but later became discouragedbecause of insufficient experience in drilling technology. 2. 2. Food packaging design to support sorting behavior

    Author : Babak Nemat; Mariano Jr Reyes Ramirez; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Household waste; design attributes; packaging waste; design approaches; sorting behavior; sustainability; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning;

    Abstract : Due to population growth, urbanization, higher income levels, and intensive use of packaging products, the amount of waste generated by households, including food packaging waste, has been increasing continuously worldwide, posing a massive threat to societies and the environment. Therefore, proper waste management has become a challenging environmental issue and priority for governments. READ MORE

  3. 3. Numerical modeling of groundwater and air flow between compacted bentonite and fractured crystalline rock

    Author : Benoît Dessirier; Jerker Jarsjö; Andrew Frampton; Stefan Finsterle; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Two-phase flow; porous media; fractured media; compacted bentonite; crystalline rock; numerical modeling; geological disposal; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : The geological repository for final storage of spent nuclear fuel, envisioned by the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Management Company (SKB), relies on several barriers: copper canisters deposited in holes in the floor of underground tunnels in deep bedrock, embedded in a buffer of compacted bentonite. The initially unsaturated buffer would take up water from the surrounding rock mass and swell to seal any potential gap. READ MORE

  4. 4. Elucidating the Influence of Food Packaging Attributes on Source-separation of Food Packaging Waste at Home

    Author : Babak Nemat; Kamran Rousta; Isabel Ordonez; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Household waste; packaging attributes; packaging waste; consumer s recycling behavior; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning;

    Abstract : The global amount of waste generated by households, including food packaging waste, has been increasing continuously across the world, posing a massive threat to societies and the environment. Proper waste management, therefore, has become a challenging environmental issue and a priority for governments. READ MORE

  5. 5. Analytic Element Models for Groundwater Flow and Linear Elasticity in Fractured Rocks

    Author : Erik Toller; Auli Niemi; Otto Strack; Qinghua Lei; James Craig; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Analytic element method; fractures; tunnels; complex variables; linear elasticity; groundwater; fractured rock; Hydrology; Hydrologi;

    Abstract : There is an increasing demand for using deep underground space at various scales, such as small-scale geothermal wells and large-scale projects like tunnels or nuclear waste disposal. The deep underground space in fractured rock is a heterogeneous and challenging medium. READ MORE
