  1. 1. Homotrimeric dUTPases : Principles of Catalysis and Inhibitor Design

    Author : Lorena Gonzalez Palmén; Jan Kvassman; Dolores Gonzalez-Pacanowska; Högskolan i Kalmar; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dUTPases; kinetics; ground state destabilization; inhibitors; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Natural Science; Naturvetenskap;

    Abstract : The ubiquitous enzyme dUTPase hydrolyzes dUTP into dUMP and pyrophosphate, preventing DNA fragmentation and cell death due to accumulation of dUTP. Inhibitors of dUTPase could serve as drugs in the treatment of cancers and infectious diseases. This thesis presents five studies. READ MORE

  2. 2. Light’EM up! : structural characterization of light-driven membrane protein complexes by cryogenic electron microscopy

    Author : André Tomás Graça; Wolfgang P. Schröder; Johannes Messinger; Karina Persson; Werner Kühlbrandt; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 3D reconstruction; Arabidopsis thaliana; assembly; chlorophyll; cryo-EM; cyanobacteria; Deinococus radiodurans; electron; land plants; membrane protein complexes; Photosystem II; proton; single-particle analysis; S-Layer Deinoxanthin Binding Complex SDBC ; water.; Biochemistry; biokemi; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Abstract : Photosynthesis is probably the most important process for allowing life to develop into the diverse forms we see today. In this process, solar radiation is used to convert CO2 into biomass. From this process, we obtain oxygen to breathe, sources of food (plant biomass), and the potential for clean and sustainable energy. READ MORE

  3. 3. Development of Flourescence-based Immunosensors for Continous Carbohydrate Monotoring : Applications for Maltose and Glucose

    Author : Henrik Engström; Sten Ohlson; Per Ola Andersson; Christopher Lowe; Högskolan i Kalmar; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Carbohydrate; Diabetes; Immunosensor; ; Glucose; Maltose; Weak affinity chromatograhpy; Kolhydrater; Glukos; Maltose; Affinitetskromatografi; Diabetes; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Bioteknik; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Weak affinity interaction of monoclonal antibodies and carbohydrate antigens can be detected and quantified by alterations in the antibodies' intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence. These weak/transient binding events have been monitored by total internal reflection fluorescence (TlRF) by facilitating the change in intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence. READ MORE

  4. 4. "A syndrome so characteristic" Molecular and clinical studies of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Lemierre's syndrome

    Author : Karin Holm; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fusobacterium necrophorum; Lemierre’s syndrome; contact system; fibrinolysis; thrombophilia; leukotoxin;

    Abstract : Lemierre’s syndrome is caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum and involves tonsillitis, jugular vein thrombophlebitis and septic pulmonary emboli. The first studies underlying this thesis focused on bacterial interaction with coagulation. READ MORE

  5. 5. Adaptation to microenvironmental stress in glioblastoma. Mechanistic studies and potential targets

    Author : Myriam Cerezo-Magaña; Tumörmikromiljö; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Glioblastoma; Tumor microenvironment; EVs; Proteoglycans; Tumor Surfaceome;

    Abstract : Although the overall mortality in cancer is steadily decreasing, major groups of patients still respond poorly to available treatments. The key clinical challenge addressed in the present thesis work relates to the inherent adaptive capacity of glioblastoma (GBM) tumors, resulting in treatment resistance and dismal prognosis.
