  1. 1. Physiological demands of competitive elite cross-country skiing

    Author : Magnus Carlsson; Michail Tonkonogi; Christer Malm; Eva Andersson; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Performance capability; maximal oxygen uptake; lactate threshold; lean mass; double poling; power output; maximal speed; sprint skiing; distance skiing.; Hälsa och välfärd; Health and Welfare;

    Abstract : Introduction Researchers have, for decades, contributed to an increased collective understanding of the physiological demands in cross-country skiing; however, almost all of these studies have used either non-elite subjects and/or performances that emulate cross-country skiing. To establish the physiological demands of cross-country skiing, it is important to relate the investigated physiological variables to the competitive performance of elite skiers. READ MORE

  2. 2. The importance of body-mass exponent optimization for evaluation of performance capability in cross-country skiing

    Author : Tomas Carlsson; Michail Tonkonogi; Christer Malm; Klavs Madsen; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allometric scaling; power-function modelling; maximal oxygen uptake; body mass; elite skiers; distance skiing; lactate threshold; double poling; sprint skiing; competition; power output; time trial; Hälsa och välfärd; Health and Welfare;

    Abstract : Introduction Performance in cross-country skiing is influenced by the skier’s ability to continuously produce propelling forces and force magnitude in relation to the net external forces. A surrogate indicator of the “power supply” in cross-country skiing would be a physiological variable that reflects an important performance-related capability, whereas the body mass itself is an indicator of the “power demand” experienced by the skier. 3. 3. PHYSIOLOGICAL AND BIOMECHANICAL FACTORS DETERMINING CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING PERFORMANCE

    Author : Erik Andersson; Hans-Christer Holmberg; Glenn Björklund; Thomas Stöggl; Jos J. de Koning; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : cycle characteristics; energy cost; energy yield; incline; joint angles; kinematics; kinetics; mechanics; Nordic skiing; oxygen deficit; oxygen demand; technique transitions; total metabolic rate.;

    Abstract : Cross-country (c.c.) skiing is a complex sport discipline from both physiological and biomechanical perspectives, with varying course topographies that require different proportions of the involved sub-techniques to be utilised. A relatively new event in c. READ MORE

  4. 4. Physiological and biomechanical aspects of rifle carriage during biathlon skiing

    Author : Malin Jonsson Kårström; Marko Laaksonen; Kerry McGawley; Guillaume Millet; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 3D-measurement; anaerobic energy contribution; crosscountry skiing; kinematics; lactate threshold; load carriage; oxygen uptake; performance; sex differences; sub-techniques; training;

    Abstract : Biathlon is an endurance-based winter sport that combines crosscountry (XC) skiing with rifle marksmanship. While skiing, biathletes carry the rifle (weighing ≥ 3.5 kg) on their backs. However, research regarding the effects of rifle carriage in biathlon is lacking. READ MORE

  5. 5. Epidemiological Studies on Long Distance Cross-Country Skiers : Participants in the Vasaloppet 1955-2010

    Author : Ulf Hållmarker; Stefan James; Johan Ärnlöv; Dan Hellberg; Mats Börjesson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Epidemiology; Cohort study; Physical activity; Lifestyle; Prevention; Sports medicine; Cancer; Cardiovascular disease; Mortality; Cardiac arrest; Atrial fibrillation; Myocardial infarction; Stroke; Cross-Country skiing; Vasaloppet; Sweden; Epidemiology; Epidemiologi;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to study the influence of physical activity on health. Risks and benefits of physical activity is of particular interest since there is a global trend of less physical activity among youths and adults. READ MORE
