  1. 1. Predictive markers : for treatment sensitivity in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

    Author : Lovisa Farnebo; Karin Roberg; Ann-Charlotte Johansson; Lena Norberg-Spaak; Antti Mäkitie; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer world wide. In Sweden approximately 850 new cases are diagnosed each year, and two thirds are men. The past decades of improved treatment strategies have unfortunately not significantly improved the five-year survival rates for this group of patients. READ MORE

  2. 2. Genomic and transcriptomic sequencing in chronic lymphocytic leukemia

    Author : Diego Cortese; Richard Professor; Carlos López Otín; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; chronic; lymphocytic; leukemia; CLL; genomics; transcriptomics; DNA; RNA; mutations; NGS; whole-exome; sequencing; prognostic; markers; TP53; SF3B1; RPS15; relapse; stereotyped; subsets.;

    Abstract : Identification of recurrent mutations through next-generation sequencing (NGS) has given us a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) development and progression and provided novel means for risk assessment in this clinically heterogeneous disease. In paper I, we screened a population-based cohort of CLL patients (n=364) for TP53, NOTCH1, SF3B1, BIRC3 and MYD88 mutations using Sanger sequencing, and confirmed the negative prognostic impact of TP53, SF3B1 or NOTCH1 aberrations, though at lower frequencies compared to previous studies. 3. 3. Characterization and Use of a Multiplex PCR-based System: Random amplified Polymorphic DNA

    Author : Christer Halldén; Malmö Klinisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DNA mixtures; competition; graphical genotypes; bulked segregant analysis; linkage map; genetic distance; RFLP markers; RAPD markers; oilseed rape; sugar beet; Genetics; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : Random amplified polymorhic DNA (RAPD) is a PCR-based marker system that makes use of universal sets of short oligonucleotides that amplify random DNA fragments under low-stringency conditions. The RAPD marker system has found widespread use and possesses a number of very positive features, being a multiplex and universal system. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mitochondrial DNA in Sensitive Forensic Analysis

    Author : Martina Nilsson; Marie Allen; Ulf Gyllensten; Antti Sajantila; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Genetics; Forensic genetics; Mitochondrial DNA; HVI HVII; Nuclear DNA; Quantification; Real-time PCR; Immobilised SSO probe assay; Pyrosequencing; Discrimination power; Coding region; Mixtures; Genetik;

    Abstract : Genetic profiling is commonly performed on the autosomes using multiple DNA markers. Although routine forensic DNA analysis is robust and based on reliable technologies, samples with degraded or limited amounts of DNA often fail. In these cases, the analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can be very valuable due to the high copy number per cell. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sensitive Identification Tools in Forensic DNA Analysis

    Author : Hanna Edlund; Marie Allen; Niels Morling; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : forensic genetics; STRs; Y-chromosome; Pyrosequencing; mitochondrial DNA; skeletal remains; DNA extraction; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicinsk genetik; Medical Genetics;

    Abstract : DNA as forensic evidence is valuable in criminal investigations. Implementation of new, sensitive and fast technologies is an important part of forensic genetic research. This thesis aims to evaluate new sensitive methods to apply in forensic DNA analysis including analysis of old skeletal remains. READ MORE
