1. Studies on Prostanoid Production in the Umbilicoplacental Circulation
Abstract : The fetoplacental circulation is a low pressure system with a high vascular prostacyclin to thromboxane (Pc/Tx)synthesis ratio. In intrauterin growth restriction (IUGR) and diabetes the prostanoid balance may be altered. READ MORE

2. Three - dimensional ultrasound studies of the cervix in pregnancy
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate cervical physiological changes by three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound during pregnancy and to investigate the ability of 3D power Doppler to predict time to spontaneous and induced delivery in prolonged pregnancy. The thesis is based on five studies: reproducibility of cervical measurements by 3D power Doppler ultrasound (study I), reference data representative normal findings of the cervix assessed by 3D ultrasound during pregnancy (studies II, III) and the ability of 3D power Doppler to predict time to spontaneous and induced delivery in prolonged pregnancy. 3. Fetal surveillance and outcome in postterm pregnancy
Abstract : To minimize the risk of short-term and long-term morbidity and mortality among children born postterm, studies were performed to evaluate the fetal surveillance program. (1) Male-fetus pregnancies were at an increased risk... READ MORE

4. Fetal Outcome in Experimental Diabetic Pregnancy
Abstract : Women with pregestational diabetes have a 2-5 fold increased risk of giving birth to malformed babies compared with non-diabetic women. Diabetes-induced oxidative stress in maternal and embryonic tissues has been implicated in the teratogenic process. READ MORE

5. Ultrasound as predictor of perinatal outcome
Abstract : The aim of the work described in this thesis was to evaluate the value of ultrasound examinations of the amniotic fluid, umbilical cord and blood flow velocity waveform of the fetal and placental vessels as predictors of the perinatal outcome. In the first study, the amniotic fluid index (AFI) measured on admission to the labour ward was evaluated in low-risk pregnancies. READ MORE
