  1. 1. Effects of nucleus pulposus on nerve root circulation and function. Morphologic and functional studies in an experimental model using porcine spinal nerve roots

    Author : Gunnar Byröd; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Nerve root; dorsal root ganglion; intervertebral disc; nucleus pulposus; epidural space; nerve fibre; permeability; blood flow; sciatica;

    Abstract : Sciatica due to lumbar disc herniation has for many decades been viewed as a consequence of mechanical compression exerted on spinal nerve roots by the bulging disc tissues. Recent research has, however, indicated that extruded nucleus pulposus (NP) from the intervertebral disc might cause functional and endoneurial morphological changes in spinal nerve roots, without mechanical compression. 2. 2. Studies on pain-related messengers and receptors in dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord

    Author : Malin Rydh-Rinder; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Pain is the most common reason why people seek medical advice. A large group of patients suffering from so-called neuropathic pain, due to injury to the nervous system itself, is often not helped by the currently available therapies. Classical analgesic drugs, such as opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, may have severe side effects. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on Peripheral Nerve Regeneration: Microdispensing, Neurite Guidance and Galectins

    Author : Per Gustavsson; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; vävnadskultur; histokemi; cytokemi; Histologi; tissue culture; histochemistry; cytochemistry; Histology; Schwann cells; sciatic nerve; dorsal root ganglia; DRG; neurite guidance; galectins; inkjet; microdispensing; peripheral nervous system; nerve regeneration; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : The present thesis describes development of a microdispenser-based technique to create of protein patterns for neurite guidance. The same technique was also developed to allow direct positioning of dissociated cells, including neurons, on cell culture substrates. Finally the role of galectin-3 and 8 during nerve regeneration was investigated. READ MORE

  4. 4. Phospholipase A2 in nerve injury and axonal outgrowth

    Author : Marie Hornfelt; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neurology; cell death; apoptosis; leukotrienes; arachidonic acid; M-type receptor; secretory phospholipase A2; cytosolic phospholipase A2; sciatic nerve; dorsal root ganglia; growth cone; axonal outgrowth; nerve injury; peripheral nerve regeneration; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with processes coupled to injury in the peripheral nervous system (PNS), with a general aim to investigate the role of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) enzymes in axonal outgrowth. The axonal outgrowth of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in vitro was reduced by several different inhibitors of PLA2 activity and enhanced by an activator of this enzyme. READ MORE

  5. 5. Bioelectronic Devices for Targeted Drug Delivery and Monitoring of Microbial Electrogenesis

    Author : Arghyamalya Roy; Daniel T Simon; Klas Tybrandt; Christopher Proctor; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Electrophoresis; Extracellular Electron Transfer EET ; Ion Exchange Membranes IEM ; Drug Delivery; Bupivacaine; Chronic Neuropathic Pain; Microfabrication; Inkjet Printing; Organic Electrochemical Transistor OECT ; Fumarate; Shewanella oneidensis; Dorsal Root Ganglia DRG ; Organic Electronic Ion Pump OEIP ;

    Abstract : Despite a range of pain therapies available in the market, 70% of patients report so-called “breakthrough pain”. Coupled with global issues like opioid crisis, there is a clear need for advanced therapies and technologies for pain management. READ MORE
