  1. 11. Immunocytochemical studies of excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters and transporters in the spinal cord and nucleus submedius

    Author : Stefan Persson; Neurofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; Neurology; VGLUT2; VGLUT1; pain; somatosensory; thalamus; immunogold; glutamate; aspartate; dorsal horn; excitatory amino acids; spinal cord; neurofysiologi; Neurologi;

    Abstract : The amino acid glutamate is today regarded as the main fast excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and a large body of evidence support that glutamate serves as a neurotransmitter in primary afferent terminals in the spinal cord. Previous evidence also suggests that the closely related amino acid aspartate may serve a similar role in some primary afferent terminals. READ MORE

  2. 12. Embryonic ecdysone-induced gene expression and progression of organ morphogenesis

    Author : Tina Mitra Chavoshi Alizadeh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Drosophila; trachea; hindgut; tubulogenesis; luminal matrix; ecdysteroid; EcR:Usp; dorsal closure;

    Abstract : The formation of an epithelial organ requires a set of organ-specific gene programs that instruct parallel and successive developmental events. Still, it is unclear what are the core regulatory programs and how such programs are timely coordinated within the organ. READ MORE

  3. 13. Molecular Adaptations in the Endogenous Opioid System in Human and Rodent Brain

    Author : Muhammad Zubair Hussain; Georgy Bakalkin; Anita Hansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endogenous Opioid System; Dynorphins; Lateralization; Alcohol Dependence; Emotions; Traumatic Brain Injury; Anterior Cingulate Cortex; Dorsal Striatum; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : The aims of the thesis were to examine i) whether the endogenous opioid system (EOS) is lateralized in human brain areas involved in processing of emotions and pain; ii) whether EOS responses to unilateral brain injury depend on side of lesion, and iii) whether in human alcoholics, this system is involved in molecular adaptations in brain areas relevant for cognitive control of addictive behavior and habit formation.The main findings were that (1) opioid peptides but not opioid receptors and classic neurotransmitters are markedly lateralized in the anterior cingulate cortex involved in processing of  positive and negative emotions and affective component of pain. 4. 14. Keeping Eye and Mind on the Road

    Author : Trent Victor; Claes von Hofsten; John Wann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Psychology; Vision; Eye-movements; Driving; Attention; Distraction; Ventral stream; Dorsal stream; Road safety; Traffic crashes; Evaluation methodology; Psykologi; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Abstract : This thesis is devoted to understanding and counteracting the primary contributing factor in traffic crashes: inattention. Foremost, it demonstrates the fundamental importance of proactive gaze in the road centre area for action guidance in driving. READ MORE

  5. 15. Studies on pain-related messengers and receptors in dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord

    Author : Malin Rydh-Rinder; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Pain is the most common reason why people seek medical advice. A large group of patients suffering from so-called neuropathic pain, due to injury to the nervous system itself, is often not helped by the currently available therapies. Classical analgesic drugs, such as opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, may have severe side effects. READ MORE
