  1. 21. Illumination in single cell optical microscopy studies - friend and foe

    Author : Kristofer Bodvard; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; yeast; transcription factors; signalling; fluorescence microscopy; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; light-induced stress; phototoxicity; single cell imaging;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on how to use light as a biological stress factor in optical microscopy experiments and simultaneously use the illumination to image the spatial and temporal protein dynamics in single yeast cells. The stress responses to environmental changes other than light have been extensively investigated in budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, often using techniques based on population averages. 2. 22. Interactions between leukocytes, platelets and the endothelium in vein graft failure

    Author : Chi-Nan Tseng; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Autologous venous grafts are preferred conduits in bypass surgery due to their length, easy harvesting, and feasibility. However, development of intimal hyperplasia decreases long-term patency rate in venous grafts prompting close clinical surveillance and further intervention. READ MORE

  3. 23. Exercise and regulation of metabolic function in human skeletal muscle : with special reference to PGC-1α and the mitochondria

    Author : Eva-karin Gidlund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Regular physical activity is highly associated with many health benefits and regular exercise training is used in the prevention and treatment of a large number of disease conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. One of the key adaptations to regular exercise training is mitochondrial biogenesis and improved oxidative capacity, particularly in skeletal muscle tissue. READ MORE

  4. 24. Learning for safety in health care and air traffic control

    Author : Sven Ternov; Ergonomi och aerosolteknologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Risk management; accident models; complex systems; health care; air traffic control; MTO analysis; DEB-analysis; proactive risk analysis.;

    Abstract : Introduction Risk management in enterprises, organisations and companies has had a long and complicated history. During the eighties, and at least during the beginning of the nineties, the notion concerning risk management was that if an accident happened in an otherwise perfect system it was due to the human operator in some way being the cause of the error.
