1. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in a river ecosystem
Abstract : Atmospheric deposition is one source of persistent pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in aquatic environments. Other point sources can also contribute to the PCB loadings in the water. READ MORE

2. Sediment resuspension : Impacts and extent of human disturbances
Abstract : Resuspension of sediment by anthropogenic disturbances is a concern due to the impacts it has on organisms and ecosystems. Bottom trawling is one major cause of sediment resuspension. A field study showed that a small trawl created a sediment plume 120 - 150 m wide and 15-18 m high (Paper 1). The sediment in the same study was highly contaminated. READ MORE

3. Microbial diversity in Baltic Sea sediments
Abstract : This thesis focuses on microbial community structures and their functions in Baltic Sea sediments. First we investigated the distribution of archaea and bacteria in Baltic Sea sediments along a eutrophication gradient. READ MORE

4. Sustainable management of dredged sediments : potential recovery of valuable compounds
Abstract : Dredging of sediments occurs worldwide to increase water depth in harbours, bays, lakes and rivers, as well as to recover aquatic ecosystems. Landfilling and open-ocean discharge are traditional disposal routes for dredged material. However, the methods are restricted by environmental and legal concerns. READ MORE

5. Three Dimensional Hydro-Morphological Modeling of Tigris River
Abstract : The River Tigris is a major river in Iraq. It divides Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, in two parts. The reach of the river within Baghdad is about 60 km long. The climate change within the region and the construction of hydraulic structures upstream of Baghdad has reduced the water discharge of the river by 44%. READ MORE
