  1. 16. Novel Endpoints To Unravel Developmental Neurotoxicity : From DNA methylation responses to methylmercury to the in vitro identification of endocrine disruptors

    Author : Andrea Cediel-Ulloa; Joëlle Rüegg; Pamela J. Lein; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Developmental neurotoxicity; Methylmercury; DNA methylation; Endocrine disruptors; in vitro assay development; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology; Biologi med inriktning mot miljötoxikologi;

    Abstract : The developing brain is especially sensitive to environmental stressors due to its dependence on the precise spatiotemporal regulation of multiple signals, and the long time period required for its formation. Some chemicals can interfere with molecular and cellular processes driving brain development, including epigenetic processes such as DNA methylation. READ MORE

  2. 17. Behaviour and life-history responses to chick provisioning under risk of nest predation

    Author : Sönke Eggers; David Winkler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Chick provisioning; clutch size; delayed dispersal; nest concealment; nest predation; parental care; population decline; Perisoreus infaustus; Siberian jay; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : This thesis examines risk management in breeding Siberian jays (Perisoreus infaustus), which is indigenous to the northern taiga. Parent behaviour and the nest are cryptic. A new nest is built each year. It is placed on spruce or pine branches close to the trunk and well insulated with lichens, feathers and reindeer hair. READ MORE

  3. 18. Aspects of Bacterial Resistance to Silver

    Author : Susanne Sütterlin; Åsa Melhus; Björn Olsen; Roland Möllby; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antimicrobial resistance; Silver resistance; Clinical Bacteriology; Klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : Bacterial resistance to antibiotics has increased rapidly within recent years, and it has become a serious threat to public health. Infections caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria entail higher morbidity, mortality, and a burden to health care systems. READ MORE

  4. 19. Properties of some chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with respect to chemical analysis

    Author : Ulrika Nilsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis describes chemical and biological properties of chloro-added and chloro-substituted PAHs with respect to chemical analysis. The work includes biological testing with Ames assay, study of chemical reactivities in chlorination reactions and retention characteristics on normal phase stationary phases for HPLC, as well as analysis of urban air samples with respect to chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs). 5. 20. Development of a regeneration procedure for commercial automotive three-wy catalysts

    Author : Henrik Birgersson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; deactivation; fouling; sintering; poisoning; palladium; rhodium; regeneration; dispersion; thermal gas treatment; oxy-chlorine; TWC; automotive catalyst; Chemical process equipment; Kemisk apparatteknik;

    Abstract : Car exhaust catalysts were introduced in the early 1980’s, to limit the release of pollutants such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxides and nitrogen oxides. These catalysts contain noble metals such as palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt) and rhodium (Rh) and are able to simultaneously abate all three of the above-mentioned pollutants, hence the name three-way catalyst (TWC).
