  1. 1. Studies on translation initiation and gene expression in Escherichia coli

    Author : Ernesto I. Gonzalez de Valdivia; Leif Isaksson; Stephen Douthwaite; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Downstream region; NGG codons; abortive translation; drop-off; Shine-Dalgarno sequence; gene expression and Escherichia coli; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : In prokaryotes, several mRNA sequences surrounding the initiation codon have been found to influence the translation process; these include the downstream region and its codon context, the Shine-Dalgarno sequence and the S1 ribosomal protein-binding site. In this thesis, the purpose has been to study the role of the downstream region and Shine-Dalgarno-like sequences on early translation elongation and gene expression in Escherichia coli. READ MORE

  2. 2. Determinants of peptidyl-tRNA drop-off from E. coli Ribosomes : Effects of antibiotics, mutations and translation factors

    Author : Reza Karimi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : During protein synthesis, some peptidyl-tRNA molecules dissociate from the ribosomes and become hydrolysed by peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase (Pth). Two different in vitro systems, poly(U) and natural mRNA programmed ribosomes, have been used in order to determine dissociation (drop-off) rates of deacylated- and peptidyl-tRNAs from different sites on ribosomes. 3. 3. To evaluate source sorting programs in household waste collection systems

    Author : Lisa Dahlén; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Waste Science and Technology; Avfallsteknik;

    Abstract : When evaluating and comparing household waste collection systems, various aspects are relevant to consider, e.g. READ MORE

  4. 4. Spin Transport Studies of Nanoscaled Ferromagnetic Tunneling Devices

    Author : Ruisheng Liu; Fasta tillståndets fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance.; tunneling magnetoresistance; ferromagnetic single electron transistor; spin relaxation; Spin transport;

    Abstract : This thesis presents spin transport studies of ferromagnetic nano-scaled tunneling devices fabricated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and electron beam lithography (EBL). The thesis covers three main topics: The first topic is a study of spin accumulation (relaxation) in Au nano-structures using Ni/Au/Ni ferromagnetic single electron transistors (F-SETs). READ MORE

  5. 5. Macrolide Antibiotics in Bacterial Protein Synthesis

    Author : Martin Lovmar; Måns Ehrenberg; Tanel Tenson; Peter B. Moore; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; protein synthesis; macrolides; resistance; initiation of translation; non-competitive inhibitors; kinetics; translation accuracy; proof-reading; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Macrolides are a large group of clinically relevant antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the large ribosomal subunit in the peptide exit tunnel, close to the peptidyl transferase center (PTC). We have shown that the peptide length of the resulting peptidyl-tRNA drop-off products is proportional to the distance between the PTC and the respective macrolide in the tunnel. READ MORE
