6. In Vivo Active Drug Uptake and Efflux at the Blood-Brain Barrier : With Focus on Drug Transport Interactions
Abstract : The blood-brain barrier (BBB) controls the movement of substances into and out of the brain. The tight junctions between endothelial cells and energy dependent transporters in the BBB influence rate and extent of drug distribution to the brain. READ MORE

7. Constraints on up-regulation of drug efflux in the evolution of ciprofloxacin resistance
Abstract : The crucial role of antibiotics in modern medicine, in curing infections and enabling advanced medical procedures, is being threatened by the increasing frequency of resistant bacteria. Better understanding of the forces selecting resistance mutations could help develop strategies to optimize the use of antibiotics and slow the spread of resistance. READ MORE

8. Heterogeneity of leukemic cells with regard to daunorubicin accumulation and efflux : potential role in drug resistance
Abstract : Cellular resistance to chemotherapy is a major cause of treatment failure in acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) and other malignancies. Drug resistance is multifactorial; the most studied mechanism being multidrug resistance (MDR), mediated by the P-glycoprotein (PPG), a transmembrane transport protein with a pump function, encoded by the mdr 1 gene. 9. Drug Transport and Metabolism in Rat and Human Intestine
Abstract : One of the aims of this thesis was to investigate the involvement of efflux proteins, such as the P-glycoprotein (Pgp), in the drug transport in different regions of the rat and the human intestine. The intestinal extrusion of intracellularly formed CYP3A4 metabolites, including whether this extrusion might be mediated by Pgp, was also studied. READ MORE

10. Blood-Brain Barrier Transport : Investigation of Active Efflux using Positron Emission Tomography and Modelling Studies
Abstract : This thesis examines the transport of exogenous molecules across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), focusing on active efflux, using positron emission tomography (PET), computer simulation and modelling. P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inhibition was studied using [11C]verapamil and [11C]hydroxyurea was investigated as a new marker for active efflux transport. READ MORE
